Summary
The Queens County District Attorney's Office is looking for applicants to fill full-time, entry level Trial Preparation Assistant (TPA) positions within our office.
DescriptionTrial Preparation Assistants have a wide array of responsibilities that may differ depending upon bureau assignment. Generally, TPAs assist Assistant District Attorneys with preparing cases at all stages. This work may involve interviewing members of the New York City Police Department, as well as victims and/or witnesses, in order to create affidavits; gathering, creating and compiling the paperwork required to create case files;
drafting legal documents and correspondence; obtaining necessary evidence/documentation relating to cases from outside sources; identifying, locating, communicating and scheduling various witnesses; coordinating travel arraignments; assisting attorneys in the courtroom; conducting legal research and writing; handling Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) and exhibit requests.
- Interview members of the New York City Police Department, victims and/or witnesses to create affidavits.
- Gather, create and compile paperwork required to create case files.
- Draft legal documents and correspondence; obtain necessary evidence/documentation from outside sources.
- Identify, locate, communicate and schedule various witnesses.
- Coordinate travel arraignments and assist attorneys in the courtroom.
- Conduct legal research and writing; handle FOIL and exhibit requests.
- Bachelor's Degree preferred in Criminal Justice, Paralegal Studies or related area, or equivalent education and/or experience. Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience as a paralegal, legal assistant or in another similar capacity or candidates with an ABA-approved paralegal certificate. All candidates must have at least a high school diploma or its educational equivalent.
- TPAs must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to interact with staff at all levels and to multi-task in a fast-paced environment with competing demands. Strong attention to detail and a proactive approach, including strong follow-up skills, accuracy and the ability to meet deadlines are required.
Job Details: SCHEDULES VARY BASED UPON THE NEEDS OF THE BUREAU.
Starting Salary (non-negotiable): $55,000; upon completion of two years of continuous service, salary: $60,000.
Comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, deferred compensation, NYC pension. NYS residency required.
