Supervising Attorney, CARECEN

The Supervising Attorney oversees our New York Legal Response team, leading a team to
meet the critical legal needs of these recent arrivals. The Supervising Attorney is
primarily responsible for overseeing both the substantive legal and administrative
components of the program, supervising paralegals, volunteer attorneys and law
students, and ensuring the provision of quality legal services for recent-arrivals on Long
Island.

Responsibilities:

• Develop, administer, and oversee CARECEN’s New York Legal Response programming in collaboration with the Legal Director
• Supervise two paralegals, pro bono attorneys and law school students
• Review and provide feedback for all applications and forms completed, both by paralegals and pro bono attorneys and law school students
• Provide and/or identify relevant training opportunities for program staff and volunteers
• Maintain detailed records and reporting data for relevant grant and/or case management
• Direct Representation
• Provide direct representation to a limited number of recently-arrived non-citizens who are in removal proceedings
• Liaise with partner community-based organizations and other stakeholders to provide pro se clinics
• Represent CARECEN in rapid response coalitions and meetings
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

• Admitted and in good standing to the practice of law in New York
• Three or more years’ experience in both affirmative and defensive immigration law (law school experience will be considered)
• Prior experience supervising legal teams
• Excellent organizational, computer, research and communication skills
• Creative, collaborative, self-directed and detail oriented
• Must be compassionate, exercise discretion, and possess cross-cultural sensitivity
• Fluency in Spanish and English required
