Overview

The New York City Law Department is accepting applications from admitted attorneys with a minimum of four years of litigation experience for the position of Assistant Corporation Counsel (ACC) in the Family Court Division’s Advanced Litigation and Major Case Unit. Successful candidates will receive extensive training and develop expertise in the investigation and prosecution of firearms cases. They will primarily handle cases involving the possession and/or use of firearms, but may also handle other types of felony cases.

The ACC would work primarily in our Bronx, Brooklyn, or Manhattan offices, but may be required to appear in any of the Family Courts across all five boroughs of New York City.

The Juvenile Delinquency Unit serves as the Presentment Agency in juvenile delinquency proceedings before the Family Court. Juvenile delinquency matters currently involve youth under 18 who have been arrested for conduct that would constitute a crime if they were adults. The goal of these proceedings is to address the needs and best interest of the youth and to ensure the safety of the community.

Responsibilities
  • Carry a caseload in the Family Court Division’s Juvenile Delinquency Unit, including all aspects of the practice: community outreach and engagement, case investigation, motion practice, extensive discovery, and courtroom litigation including pre-trial hearings, trials, and dispositional hearings.
  • Cross-designate as a Special Assistant District Attorney where the ACC will draft cases and appear in the Youth Part of the Supreme Court.
  • Participate in a citywide rotation of night and weekend court assignments.
Qualifications
  • Admitted and in good standing in New York; substantial experience in family court or criminal law, as well as litigation experience (minimum four years).
  • Strong litigation, oral and written communication skills; excellent judgment; exceptional organizational abilities; strong leadership skills; solid knowledge of criminal law, the Family Court Act and evidentiary issues; and strong interpersonal skills.
