Underwriting Director – National Accounts Excess Casualty
Zurich Insurance is looking for an experienced Executive Underwriter or AVP to lead our National Accounts Excess Casualty portfolio. The role is based in New York with a hybrid work arrangement and requires office/market presence three days per week.
As an Executive Underwriter or AVP you will grow and develop your career with a seasoned team, underwriting new and renewal National Account business under limited direction. You will apply The Zurich Way of Underwriting Framework within delegated authority on highly complex accounts, building strong broker and client networks and maintaining a strong market‑facing presence.
Responsibilities- Proactively seek renewal and new account opportunities.
- Demonstrate specialized knowledge and expertise in underwriting National Account business.
- Complete detailed opportunity assessments with key distributors to identify growth opportunities.
- Contribute to proposal development and completion; provide technical guidance, assistance, and training to lower‑level underwriters.
- Qualify accounts that meet the organization’s appetite while balancing sound business opportunity.
- Make agent/broker/customer and on‑site calls with planned and well‑prepared purposes.
- Negotiate terms & conditions and close deals.
- Cross‑sell other lines of business to increase product density with the account.
- Participate in sales team meetings related to assigned brokers and/or territory.
- Proactively engage in the target account process, managing a qualified list of opportunities 90 to 120 days prior to effective date.
- Develop strong broker and client networks related to industries underwritten by the Business Unit.
- High School Diploma or equivalent and 5+ years of experience in Underwriting or Market‑Facing area, OR
- High School Diploma or equivalent and 10+ years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support area, OR
- Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 3+ years of experience in Underwriting or Market‑Facing area, OR
- Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 8+ years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support area AND
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Experience working on time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business.
- Experience working in a team environment.
- High School Diploma or equivalent and 7+ years of experience in Underwriting or Market‑Facing area, OR
- High School Diploma or equivalent and 14+ years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support area, OR
- Zurich approved Apprenticeship program including an Associate Degree and 5+ years of experience in Underwriting or Market‑Facing area, OR
- Zurich approved Apprenticeship program including an Associate Degree and 12+ years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support area AND
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Experience working in a team environment.
- Experience with Umbrella underwriting.
- Bachelors Degree.
- CPCU certification.
- Advanced knowledge of National Account Excess Casualty product lines.
- Knowledge of National Account Primary Casualty and loss‑sensitive programs and accounts.
- Strong broker/customer relationships.
- Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills.
- Strong presentation skills.
- Results‑oriented mindset.
Base salary range for this position is $98,300.00 – $. Executive Underwriter level: $98,300.00 – $ (15% short‑term incentive). AVP, Underwriting Director level: $ – $ (20% short‑term incentive).
