The NYS Office of Information Technology Services is seeking an experienced professional to lead and manage mission‑critical cloud networking initiatives across multiple state agencies.
DescriptionThe Assistant Director Information Technology Technical Services 1, M‑4, will be responsible for directing, architecting, managing, and leading ongoing mission‑critical initiatives related to the design and deployment of cloud network connectivity.
Job duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Manage senior cloud network staff ensuring staff is utilizing best practices of management, installation and troubleshooting.
- Act as the technical lead for all cloud networking initiatives and oversee major projects and mission‑critical initiatives in cloud networks, including design, implementation, and testing.
- Manage and lead in the orchestration of multi‑discipline technologies for the resolution of complex problems; communicate with technology and business leaders for problem resolution and make recommendations for system enhancements as required.
- Responsible for escalation within CTO informing upper management of SEV 1 issues, ETA on resolutions, as well as root cause analysis.
- Provide 24x7x365 on‑call network support for advanced troubleshooting, escalation and ticket resolutions on a rotating basis.
- Manage the design, deployment and maintenance cloud networking infrastructure in AWS, Azure, and GCP to support new and existing NYS agency application deployments in the cloud.
- Manage the design, deployment and maintenance network virtual appliances as needed including Arista Cloud
EOS and Palo Alto PAN‑OS with integrations into CSP network infrastructure (GCP NCC, AWS TGW Connect, etc.). - Manage the design and implementation of on‑prem to cloud connectivity solutions as required by application needs in collaboration with ISO and network/application architecture teams.
- Work with Security teams on audits and ensure policies are adhered to.
- Collaborate and troubleshoot with direct cloud connectivity providers to develop solutions and solve problems.
- Provide in‑depth analysis on network performance using monitoring tools such as Zenoss, Splunk, Palo Alto Panorama, Arista Cloud Vision as a Service, NfSen, Ixia, Gigastor, Wireshark, etc.
- Ensure that network availability of cloud environments is maximized by overseeing Change Control procedures, code upgrades, network monitoring, installations, moves and changes, and troubleshooting complex issues.
- Oversee network monitoring to ensure maximum network availability.
- Participate in network performance analysis, training and capacity planning.
- Document all design and implementation work using Microsoft Visio.
- Participate in knowledge transfer and training sessions with junior staff; and
- Occasional travel may be required.
- Proven ability to work independently and as a team member.
- Proven ability to lead teams and develop cloud network engineers.
- Proven analytical, problem solving, organizational and time management skills.
- Good communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills.
- Expert AWS network infrastructure.
- Expert Azure network infrastructure.
- Expert GCP network infrastructure.
- Working knowledge of CSP application platforms and their networking requirements.
- Proficiency with Cloud Shell in all platforms for data extraction and reporting at scale.
- Proficiency in layer 3 routing including BGP, VRFs, route maps, redistribution, NAT, subnetting, etc.
- Proficiency in Arista Cloud
EOS, Palo Alto PAN‑OS, IPSec, MACsec, DNS, dedicated connectivity, Telco carriers, monitoring and packet capture/analysis tools, Microsoft Visio.
Minimum Qualifications
One year of permanent competitive services as an Assistant Director Information Technology Technical Services 1 OR in a position at G‑29/M‑3 or higher deemed administrative under Section 52.6 of Civil Service Law OR in a title eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of Civil Service Law. The transfer cannot be a second consecutive transfer resulting in advancement of more than two salary grades.
