Position: Payroll, Benefits & HR Operations Specialist
Location: New York

Bustle Digital Group is looking for a Payroll & Benefits, HR Manager who will manage company payroll, benefits, HRIS, and state agency interactions. The role involves entering payroll data, calculating wages, processing payments, and verifying benefits assignments while responding to state agency requests such as audits, unemployment, and data requests. This position requires a strong understanding of confidentiality and meticulous attention to detail to carry out all payroll procedures quickly and accurately.

The individual will manage day‑to‑day data for payroll, benefits, and the HRIS system.

The successful candidate is highly organized, a strong communicator, and proficient in HRIS data management. They will work closely with senior HR members to ensure benefits feeds are properly implemented and run smoothly day to day.

Payroll
  • Assist Payroll Manager in preparing payroll for hourly, salaried, and temporary employees; including reviewing time and attendance systems, entering tax and direct deposit information, administering regulatory requirements (e.g., garnishments, tax levies, support orders, union dues, and other adjustments) for approval by the Payroll Manager.
  • Facilitate internal communication with Managers and Supervisors during part‑time payroll semi‑monthly processing.
  • Respond to unemployment claims promptly.
  • Respond to verifications of employment promptly.
  • Maintain and update employee records in the payroll system promptly.
  • Onboard employees and assign class codes, position codes, EEO classifications, WC codes, benefits class, and retirement plan eligibility.
  • Offboard employees and ensure state compliance.
  • Assist in audit processes as needed.
  • Stay abreast of compliance changes and communicate these to the HR team as required.
  • Utilize payroll and HR software to maintain accurate and current employee data.
Benefits
  • Maintain all third‑party data and update enrollment and terminations as needed with all employee benefit program vendors.
  • Reconcile the monthly and quarterly benefit invoices.
  • Run reports used to process monthly benefit invoices, including medical, dental, vision, Long Term Disability, Short Term Disability, Life, and supplementary benefits.
  • Help oversee and manage the leave of absence (LOA) program.
  • Help run all needed reports and work with the Generalist team to compile all governmental regulatory mandates and ensure filings are performed as required, such as annual FSA compliance testing.
  • Help lead the open‑enrollment process, including setting up the EDI feeds between the Payroll vendor and benefits vendors.
  • Monitor ACA compliance and eligibility in the payroll system and flag any changes or updates to the Payroll team.
  • Plan, conduct, and report audit results to ensure enrollments are accurate and dependent information is correct for each employee.
  • Maintain workers’ comp data and file feed between payroll vendor and Workers Comp vendor.
HR Operations
  • Assist with ongoing HR projects, including process improvements, system upgrades, and employee engagement initiatives.
  • Participate in the implementation of HR programs and initiatives, ensuring efficient and effective execution.
  • Help identify areas of improvement in HR operations and suggest solutions to enhance overall efficiency.
Requirements
  • 3–5+ years of experience in payroll and benefits roles for companies with 100+ employees.
  • Experience handling sensitive and private information with discretion.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Familiar with Paylocity and other major payroll vendors.
  • Experience managing EDI feeds between payroll and benefits vendors.
  • Understanding of annual filings such as FSA audits, workers’ compensation, tax filings, and year‑end filings.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while collaborating across departments.
  • Team‑player who harmonizes with diverse personalities and proactively builds relationships.

$70,000 - $75,000 a year
