Job Description & How to Apply Below
Position: People Operations Consultant (1099)
Location: New York

KC3 is a mission-driven organization dedicated to advancing energy equity and supporting communities through thoughtful, people-centered work. We operate across New York and New Jersey with a growing team of employees and skilled contractors, and we’re intentional about building systems that are clear, compliant, and humane. As we continue to grow, we’re investing in people operations that support our team well.

Role Overview

We’re seeking a People Operations Consultant to support the day-to-day execution of core HR functions, including HR administration, policy execution, benefits coordination, recruiting logistics, internship program management, and performance review processes. This role is project-oriented, execution-focused, and designed to evolve as organizational needs grow.

The consultant will work within KC3’s existing systems and policies, identifying opportunities for improvement over time while ensuring continuity and compliance from day one. This role partners closely with the Executive Operations Manager on onboarding and offboarding handoffs for system access and documentation. There is potential for this role to convert to a part- or full-time W-2 position based on performance, alignment, and business needs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support maintenance and updates to the employee handbook and HR policies
  • Assist in benefits administration, coordination with finance, and vendors
  • Coordinate recruiting activities: resume screening, interview scheduling, and candidate communications
  • Manage internship program logistics, onboarding, tracking, and offboarding
  • Coordinate performance review cycles and documentation processes
  • Maintain HR documentation for employees and contractors
  • Ensure staff complete all required trainings in accordance with company policies and compliance requirements
  • Maintain accurate employee status changes (promotions, role changes, leaves of absence, terminations)
  • Coordinate new hire paperwork and ensure timely completion of employment eligibility documentation (e.g., I-9s)
  • Additional HR support as needed

Note: This role executes tasks defined by leadership and does not carry internal approval authority. Work is performed within established policies, with issues requiring managerial or legal decision-making escalated as appropriate.

Qualifications
  • 3–6+ years of hands-on HR / People Operations experience
  • Comfort working independently in a flexible, evolving environment
  • Experience with onboarding, benefits admin, recruiting coordination, and performance processes
  • Strong HR policy and documentation skills
  • Working knowledge of NY and NJ employment practices
Why KC3?

KC3 offers a purpose-driven work environment for people who care about building thoughtful, people-centered systems. We value clarity, follow-through, and sustainable work practices, and we aim to create structures that support real humans. This role offers flexible scheduling, meaningful ownership, and the opportunity to shape how people operations function during an important stage of organizational growth. For the right fit, there is also the potential to transition into a part- or full-time W-2 role after an initial engagement period.

What

Conversion Might Look Like

At approximately 6–9 months, we’ll assess workload consistency (generally ~20–30 hours per week), quality and ownership in execution, employee and leadership satisfaction, and alignment with organizational needs. If the engagement is mutually successful and the work continues to align, we’ll have a thoughtful conversation about transitioning this role into a part- or full-time W-2 People Operations Generalist position, with compensation and benefits that reflect the scope, impact, and sustainability of the role.

Hiring

Timeline

The job posting will close on February 12. To support an equitable and intentional hiring process, we will begin reviewing applications after the posting closes. Candidates selected for the next steps will be contacted following that review period.
