Employee Relations, Talent Manager, HR Manager
The Human Resources Manager is the primary HR professional for the League and oversees all aspects of human resources management. This position supports a diverse community of staff, faculty, and students by providing HR services that promote a positive, equitable, and legally compliant workplace. This position is a full-time, on-site role and has a dual report to the Artistic/Executive Director and the Board of Directors.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIESRecruitment & Onboarding
- Manage full-cycle recruitment for all levels of administrative staff, faculty, and administrative roles, from writing and posting job descriptions to handling candidate interviews, reference checks, and job offers.
- Initiate and process background checks for office employees, instructors, and select monitors.
- Coordinate onboarding of senior level hires to ensure a smooth and positive hiring process.
- Update the League’s org chart as needed and keep support departments informed about new hires for staff directories, phone lists, and web site listings.
Employee & Student Relations
- Serve as the primary point of contact for employee, student, and Board of Control issues.
- Act as a liaison between management and employees.
- Provide guidance to staff and faculty on HR policies, workplace concerns, and conflict resolution.
- Support the League’s commitment to DEIA.
- Interface with external employment counsel as needed with regard to workplace issues, investigations, and compliance issues involving employees and/or students.
Performance Management
- Manage the annual performance review process, including communication of timelines, training, evaluation support as needed, and documentation.
- Advise managers and supervisors on performance improvement and corrective action plans.
- Recommend training options (online, webinars, workshops, etc.) when needed, to address performance needs and/or approved career development plans.
Benefits Administration
- Administer the League’s employee benefits programs, including health insurance and retirement plans, leave management, Employee Assistance Program (EAP), and other voluntary benefits and offerings.
- Address and resolve employee benefits inquiries and coordinate with external vendors and insurance brokers.
- Issue COBRA notification and 401k forms to departing employees.
Policies, Compliance & Documentation
- Maintain and update HR policies and procedures to ensure ongoing compliance with federal, state, and local labor laws.
- Coordinate and distribute annual updates to the ASL Employee Handbook.
- Implement NYS/NYC’s mandatory annual Sexual Harassment training.
- Manage employee files and HR documentation in accordance with legal standards and organizational requirements.
Employee Separations
- Manage the employee separation process, including exit paperwork and interview and return of League materials.
- Work with external employment counsel as needed to draft and manage Separation Agreements.
- Ensure compliance with applicable laws and policies during employee terminations.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to handle sensitive matters with confidentiality and discretion.
- Demonstrated ability to interface effectively with senior leadership, the League’s Board of Control, legal counsel, and a wide range of stakeholders.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities in a creative environment.
- Strong experience with and knowledge of HR principles and processes.
Degree(s) Required/Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field
Years of Experience Desired: Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a mid- to senior level HR Generalist position, ideally within a nonprofit, educational, or arts-related environment.
Certification(s) Required/Preferred: PHR, SHRM-CP certifications a plus.
Industry or Product Knowledge: Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local NYC employment laws;
Benefits administration a plus.
Computer
Experience:
MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); experienced with HRIS and recruiting platforms (e.g., Paycom; , Zip Recruiter; Linked In, etc.).
