Job Description

This job posting is for a College Aide, 1st Year graduate position within the Bureau of Communicable Diseases, specifically in the Disease Investigation Unit, at the NYC Health Department.

The Bureau of Communicable Diseases is tasked with the comprehensive surveillance, prevention, and control of over 70 infectious diseases, which encompass foodborne, waterborne, respiratory, zoonotic, and vector-borne illnesses. The Disease Investigation Unit within this Bureau is responsible for the rapid investigation of infectious disease cases, exposures, and outbreaks.

The unit is seeking six new interns to assist with these critical investigations. The selected candidates are expected to start in May or June 2025 and continue working with the unit throughout the academic year. The work schedule is 35 hours per week during the summer (full-time) and transitions to 19 hours per week (part-time) when school is in session.

Duties and Responsibilities (Under supervision of public health epidemiologists):
Investigate cases of reportable infectious diseases.
Collect data from health care providers and medical records.
Interview patients regarding their illness, exposures, and contacts.

• Perform data entry, data management, and/or miscellaneous projects.
Participate in outbreak investigations as needed.
Assist with other disease investigations within the Bureau of Communicable Diseases where necessary.

Preferred Skills:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Strong interest in infectious disease epidemiology.
Strong organizational and time management skills.
Currently enrolled in a graduate (MPH, MS, or PhD) program in public health or a related field.

General Qualifications for College Aide (COLLEGE AIDE (ALL CITY DEPTS) – 10209):
For Assignment Level I: Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Continued employment is contingent upon maintaining student status.
Special Note: The maximum tenure for College Aides across all assignment levels is 6 years. Students cannot be employed more than half-time in any week when classes are in session but may be employed full-time during their vacation periods.

Salary:

• The salary range for this position is $17.00 (Minimum) to $21.40 (Maximum) per hour.
