The Materials Management Technician (MMT) is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, sanitation, and operational readiness of the animal facility. This includes processing animal cages, cleaning equipment, and ensuring a hygienic environment that supports the health and welfare of laboratory animals, complying with institutional and regulatory standards.
ResponsibilitiesThe MMT is required to maintain accurate and timely documentation for all tasks to ensure compliance with institutional and regulatory standards. This includes completing and updating log sheets for rooms, equipment, and sanitization activities, as well as recording environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity. Additionally, the MMT must thoroughly review, understand, and adhere to all job related Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) protocols, and applicable safety and quality assurance guidelines.
- Operate and maintain cage wash, bottle wash, autoclaves, floor scrubber, water filtration systems and other sanitization equipment to ensure optimal performance and compliance with facility standards and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Coordinate with team members to meet daily processing targets without compromising quality or safety.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area around equipment to prevent contamination and ensure safe operation.
- Clean and sanitize all vivarium areas, including, but not limited to, experimental and procedure rooms, corridors, and racks.
- Inspect all eye wash stations and fire extinguishers to confirm they are fully operational and audit disinfectant supplies to identify and remove expired products.
- Collect, segregate, pack, label and decontaminate biohazardous waste material for third party disposal pickup.
- Support the loading dock by assisting with receiving shipments or staging materials at the loading dock for pickup.
- Assist with Vaporized Hydrogen Peroxide (VHP) decontamination procedures.
- Restock and maintain inventory of facility consumables.
- Assist with moving caging and other equipment throughout the vivarium.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Experience working in a laboratory or research setting.
- Ability to meet attendance requirements, including working weekends and holidays on a rotational basis.
- Able to regularly work Monday to Friday, 7 am - 3:30 pm.
- Ability to lift 25 to 50 pounds.
- Ability to follow strict protocols.
- Strong attention to detail, excellent judgment, and time management skills.
- Ability to communicate information accurately, clearly, and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
- Willingness and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
This position involves working in a controlled vivarium environment that may be noisy and odorous. The role requires the ability to meet established speed and productivity standards while maintaining accuracy and compliance with safety protocols. Employees must be able to regularly lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds and safely maneuver heavy, fully loaded equipment carts. The position also demands the ability to perform repetitive tasks with precision and remain standing or stationary for extended periods.
Proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory at all times to ensure safety and prevent contamination. Work may involve exposure to cleaning agents, disinfectants, and biohazard materials, requiring strict adherence to hygiene and safety guidelines.
The expected hourly salary for this position is: $22.28 per hour.
