The University Eye Center (UEC) of the State University of New York College of Optometry, an Article 28 Diagnostic and Treatment Center, is seeking a Certified Professional Coder. The successful candidate must be detailed oriented and be able to multitask with excellent time management, problem solving, and investigative skills. Understanding of managed care, Medicare, Medicaid, commercial payers, and self‑pay guidelines is required.
Reporting to the Director of Patient Financial Services, the Certified Professional Coder will be responsible for review of pre- and post‑charges in order to maximize reimbursement, minimize denials, and comply with accepted coding practices.
- Review provider documentation for charge accuracy and correction of diagnostic and procedural coding, coding integrity and revenue optimization prior to claims submission.
- Review and monitor statistics and key performance indicators to identify improvement opportunities.
- Review processes and conduct internal audits to improve the revenue cycle, claims production, and coding integrity.
- Educate providers on coding policies and procedures and provide feedback on coding accuracy.
- Provide guidance and education related to billing to various staff levels to increase knowledge base.
- Identify front‑end operational improvements and assist with providing in‑service to staff, as needed.
- Work collaboratively with providers and staff on reducing claim denials.
The position is located onsite at 33 West 42nd Street, NY, NY 10036, with the possibility of remote work up to 50% after completing initial orientation, in accordance with SUNY policy.
Annual salary including location pay allowance is between $62,000 – $75,000 commensurate with experience. Generous benefit package with fifteen days of annual leave per year and thirteen paid holidays per year. We are a qualifying employer in the federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program.

Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist Physician‑based (CCS‑P) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC). - A minimum of three years of experience in revenue cycle and medical coding in a healthcare environment

- Extensive knowledge of reimbursement systems, federal/state/payer‑specific regulations, and policies pertaining to documentation, coding and billing.
- Experience with vision services
- Next Gen electronic health record and practice management system
