Certified Medical Assistant/Scribe #Full TimeThe 61st Street Service Corporation, provides administrative and clinical support staff for Columbia Doctors. This position will support Columbia Doctors, one of the largest multi-specialty practices in the Northeast. Columbia Doctors’ practices comprise an experienced group of more than 2,800 physicians, surgeons, dentists, and nurses, offering more than 240 specialties and subspecialties.
Job Summary:
The Certified Medical Assistant/Scribe is an experienced professional who possesses strong collaboration and organizational abilities, demonstrates initiative, attention to detail, and sound judgment. In this role, the incumbent will provid e assistance to the physicians and patients. As a scribe, the incumbent will also enter information into the electronic medical records system (Epic) at the direction of a physician or licensed independent practitioner.
The incumbent will work closely with providers across multiple specialties as well as with other clinical and administrative staff to deliver an exceptional patient experience that contributes to positive health outcomes for patients and a work culture of Service-Oriented, Trust, Empathy, Safety, Inclusion and Communication.
Job Responsibilities:
- Greet and interact with patients, visitors, vendors, and all faculty and staff.
- Prepare patients for their visit including:
- Pre-visit organization of information, performing patient escort and rooming functions (taking vital signs, medication reconciliation, accurate documentation of chief complaint, updating history as requested, updating EMR (Epic) as required).
- Assisting patients as needed with walking, dressing, collecting and processing specimens and point of care testing, preparing for exam, etc. Serving as a chaperone in the exam room as requested.
- Assisting physicians with examinations, procedures, and department-specific therapies.
- Performing phlebotomy duties and point-of-care tests such as urinalysis and pregnancy tests.
- Preparing and labeling collected specimens, and ensuring timely delivery of specimens to appropriate designation.
- Ensuring that proper labs are drawn and documented via Epic. Assisting in troubleshooting missing labs from Epic as instructed by supervisor.
- Entering orders in Epic as required.
- Assisting providers or other clinical staff with in-office procedures as requested.
- Notifying physicians and nurses of emergencies and performing first aid.
- May remove sutures or staples under the supervision of a physician or other appropriately licensed person, provided the patient is evaluated, at a minimum, immediately before the procedure by an appropriately licensed professional.
- Open sterile packages, under the continuous and direct supervision of an appropriately licensed and credentialed individual.
- CMAs may insert items into an autoclave and may remove sealed packages from an autoclave; the CMA must, however, be under supervision once opening the sealed package of autoclaved instruments (like opening a "sterile package".)
- Process, sterilize, and organize instruments as required.
- CMAs cannot perform:
- Set up or maniupalate any sterile field.
- Perform pre-procedural preparation/disinfection (setting up a sterile field).
- Prepare and maintain medical charts.
- Copy and mail requests for medical records.
- Perform additional check-out functions such as scheduling, referrals, and additional tasks as needed.
- Prepare and maintain exam rooms (including stocking, organizing shelves and drawers, daily cleaning of counters and medical equipment). Notify management when supplies are low and need re-stocking.
- Assist providers with medical scribing to document patient’s medical records, including but not limited to medical/surgical history, medications, and allergies, applying attention to detail to produce accurate documentation in Epic as required. Adhere to protocols and processes as per the Scribe/Provider agreement.
- Accompany physician during consultation and examination as directed.
- Transcribe details of the interview and physical exam per physical instruction, utilizing medical terminology and documentation guidelines within the EMR.
- Complete all necessary documentation of the patient encounter in the medical chart, including entering orders as dictated by the physician.
- Maintain a list of patient tests, keeping track of results as they become available.
- Scan and file lab reports/test results and charts via electronic medical record, alerting the physician as laboratory or radiology results become available.
- Follow up on lab reports and track any missing or delayed studies.
- Perform additional specialty-specific duties as assigned and based on clinical operation needs.
- Other duties as assigned.
