Overview

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) seeks a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner ( PMHNP ) to provide psychiatric services for St. John’s University students. The PMHNP will be part of a dynamic team that includes psychologists, social workers, and LMHCs. The PMHNP provides a full range of psychiatric services to student patients of CAPS within the Division of Student Affairs. This includes psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up and referral when indicated;

as well as consultation and training to the professional staff of CAPS.

Responsibilities
  • Provide psychiatric treatment of eligible St. John’s University students to include: (a) evaluation and assessment, especially for appropriateness of pharmacotherapy; (b) pharmacotherapy and medication management where appropriate; (c) case management where appropriate (e.g. if client is not otherwise engaged in counseling); and (d) occasional psychotherapy, including a minimum of two individual cases per week (more as schedule and demand permits) and occasional group psychotherapy.
  • Referral of clients who exceed the scope of service of CAPS to appropriate disposition in the community.
  • Educate the client on the potential benefits of medication, group, or individual therapy and make referrals to other campus partners for non-counseling issues.
  • Provide consultation with CAPS regarding psychiatric needs of clients, including collaboration in treatment planning and therapy provision where appropriate.
  • Consult with concerned callers regarding issues of concern that affect the university and its members.
  • Participate in weekly CAPS staff meetings and clinical treatment team sessions.
  • Complete appropriate documentation of evaluation and therapy services provided through dictated and/or written records for placement in client files.
  • Provide emergency psychiatric service as needed, including facilitating inpatient admission and related services, usually in collaboration with other CAPS staff.
  • Communicate with providers at hospitals to assist with the care and transition of students to and from psychiatric hospitals.
  • Serve as a resource to the University Student of Concern Committee, as needed.
  • Provide staff development and educational seminars on selected matters of psychiatric expertise to CAPS staff and trainees.
  • Establish clinical policies and guidelines for the provision of psychiatric services.
  • Assist with the development of protocols and policies for treatment of ADHD/LD, chronic and severe mental illnesses to reflect best practices, department mission and psychiatric treatment guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by CAPS Director.
Minimum Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited BS nursing education program and a Master’s Degree in Nursing, Adult or Family Practice Nurse Practitioner.
  • Additional Certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health NP from an accredited program is required.
  • OR Graduate of an accredited BS nursing education program and sole Master’s Degree in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing from an accredited program.
  • The candidate is Board Certified by the ANA and ANCC.
  • The candidate has a current New York RN and PMHNP License and prescriptive privileges.
  • The candidate holds an active DEA License.
  • The candidate is BLS certified by the American Heart Association.
