Position SummaryWe have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Registered Respiratory Therapist. In this role, the successful candidate is responsible for the performance of cardiopulmonary evaluation, respiratory therapy treatment techniques, and education of the patient, family and public pursuant to a prescription of a licensed independent practitioner. Evaluation includes acquisition, analysis and interpretation of data from physiological specimens, performing diagnostic tests, studies and research of the cardiopulmonary system and related neurophysiological studies.
Respiratory therapy includes the application and monitoring of medical gases (excluding anesthetic gases) and environmental control systems, mechanical ventilatory support, artificial airway care, bronchopulmonary hygiene, pharmacologic agents related to respiratory care, and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation as it relates to respiratory care. The role applies scientific principles to identify, prevent, remediate, research and rehabilitate acute or chronic cardiopulmonary dysfunction.
- Documents necessary information in the patient's medical record and communicates that information to the health care team.
- Participates in activities related to professional standards and regulations of relevant outside agencies (e.g., New York State Department of Health, The Joint Commission, American College of Pathologists).
- Demonstrates knowledge of NYU Langone Core Values and incorporates them into responsibilities.
- Participates in quality improvement programs and activities that promote patient, family, physician and staff satisfaction.
- Participates in clinical inquiry and activities to foster evidence-based practice.
- Maintains awareness of current evidence-based practice and uses relevant research in patient care.

- Functions as a respectful member of the health care team and collaborates with interdisciplinary colleagues.
- Provides respiratory care in a healing, humane and caring environment, coordinating patient care activities as needed.
- Requests clarification when needed regarding policies and procedures.
- Initiates, conducts and adjusts prescribed therapeutic and diagnostic procedures (e.g., administering medical gases, humidification, aerosols, airway management, and cardiopulmonary procedures); provides support for mechanically ventilated patients; performs pulmonary function testing and physiologic monitoring; collects specimens as required.
- Considers needs of patients across age and cultural groups in all care activities.
- Reviews data, identifies additional data needs, and develops respiratory care plans; evaluates the appropriateness of therapy.
- Utilizes resources to support learning and professional development in clinical practice; seeks assistance for new techniques or equipment as needed.
- Maintains current knowledge and competence per NYS Education Law and professional standards.
- Assists in evaluation of respiratory care students and mentors others as appropriate.
- Supports the mission, standards and objectives of NYU Langone Medical Center and the Respiratory Care Department.
- Maintains awareness of respiratory care equipment and its clinical application; seeks assistance when learning needs arise.
- Participates in self-assessment and professional growth activities.
- Provides education to rotating respiratory care students, nurses and physicians in conjunction with care services.
- Includes patients and families in teaching when appropriate; clearly explains the purpose of prescribed respiratory care.
- Develops and evaluates teaching plans based on identified learning needs; recognizes when patient education is needed.
