Division/Program Summary

The Division of Disease Control’s mission is to safeguard the health of New Yorkers through identification, surveillance, treatment, control, and prevention of infectious diseases, which is achieved through varied and interrelated endeavors of its seven bureaus. The Bureau of Public Health Clinics (BPHC) mission is to promote a healthy community by providing New Yorkers with the resources needed to make informed and empowered health decisions;

identify and treat tuberculosis and provide immunization and sexual health services regardless of ability to pay or immigration status. BPHC provides direct clinic services to people seeking health care, monitors disease trends, provides education and training to service providers and community groups, conducts research, and develops policies and programs to deliver high quality clinical care which best serve New Yorkers.

Position

Summary

The Laboratory Associate-II will report directly to the Supervisor of STI Labs. The Laboratory Associate-II will supervise Laboratory Associate level-I staff who are performing phlebotomy duties in one of the Bureau’s clinics and train new Laboratory Associates.

Job Duties And Responsibilities
  • Train and supervise Laboratory Associate Level-I staff.
  • Following up prescribed patient care and emergency procedures as necessary.
  • Performs waived laboratory testing.
  • Obtaining and labeling blood specimens taken from patients.
  • Label packages and storing specimens appropriately.
  • Utilizing infection and safety practices.
  • Maintain phlebotomy area and instruments before and after usage.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or its equivalent and:
  • One year of appropriate full-time experience or training in a biological, chemical, or clinical laboratory; or
  • Eight credits, including laboratory coursework, in biology, chemistry, or medical technology, from an accredited college or university; or
  • A satisfactory equivalent combination of (1) and (2) above. However all candidates must have a high school diploma or its equivalent.
