NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is a 306‑bed medical center, providing care to residents of eastern Long Island. The hospital facility is home to the Knapp Cardiac Care Center, an advanced heart disease diagnostic and treatment facility, as well as a modern ambulatory surgical pavilion with women's imaging, a sleep laboratory, and bariatric surgery. It houses a Provisional Level 2 Trauma Center and a Stroke Center designated by the New York State Department of Health a Primary Stroke Center.
Additionally, NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk has multiple outpatient sites, including wound care, hemodialysis, and many specialty offices.
Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Supervisor, Laboratory - Microbiology - Full Time, Days. In this role the successful candidate manages the day‑to‑day operation of one section of the clinical or anatomical laboratory; ensures quality and timeliness of testing; oversees equipment, supplies, financial management, schedules and personnel. The Supervisor must be a medical technologist per section 58‑1.5(b) and have at least six years of progressive laboratory experience, of which a minimum of two years have been in a laboratory directed by a doctoral‑level professional.
- Develop new products, procedures and equipment; anticipate and recommend needs for new equipment and processes.
- Evaluate, implement and monitor workflow changes to enhance laboratory performance.
- Participate in development of total laboratory pre‑ and post‑analytical workflows.
- Set priorities, assess responsibilities and establish timetables.
- Maintain the laboratory manual current for the department.
- Organize and monitor daily operations for the section.
- Monitor staff attendance, demeanor, dress code and take appropriate action.
- Enforce safety and infection control compliance.
- Assist in job‑description development, competency assessment and evaluation.
- Develop work schedules, monitor compliance and assist with personnel selection and interviewing.
- Counsel staff in line with hospital policy and laboratory medicine standards; resolve personnel issues.
- Communicate effectively with staff; attend HR‑related meetings and training sessions.
- Monitor expenditures to ensure efficient use of financial resources.
- Maintain inventory to minimize outdating while ensuring adequate supplies.
- Evaluate quality and cost effectiveness of new or replacement supplies and equipment.
- Seek new means to meet budget objectives.
- Evaluate staffing needs and organize schedules to minimize overtime.
- Function as a resource in troubleshooting complex problems.
- Maintain, review and update all manuals, documents and procedures in a timely fashion.
- Maintain a preventative maintenance program for equipment and reagents.
- Establish, maintain and monitor a comprehensive quality control program.
- Ensure procedures are performed per protocol; review results for accuracy.
- Organize and maintain section statistics, records and files.
- Monitor proficiency test specimens and integrate them into workflow; complete questionnaires.
- Assume administrative responsibility for the entire laboratory when necessary.
- Participate in hospital and departmental P.I. programs and related committees.
- Complete reports, appraisals and training guides in a timely fashion.
- Organize work and use time effectively.
- Direct training of new employees and medical technology students; evaluate progress.
- Encourage ongoing continuing education through journals, videos and practical experience.
- Maintain current knowledge of the field via professional organizations, seminars and literature.
- Serve as a liaison with other medical professionals.
- Support staff through leadership and guidance.
- Develop cooperative relationships with physicians and patient‑care personnel.
- Step in to work as a technologist or phlebotomist when required.
- Inform the Administrative Director of changes in procedures, policy or technique.
- Ensure safety requirements are met and report issues.
