We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Medical Assistant - NYU Langone Huntington Medical Group. The Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting physicians, Advanced Care Practitioners, and nurses in providing patient care. This role validates patient identifiers, prepares patients and rooms for examination, measures and records vital signs, draws blood, and collects other lab samples. The Medical Assistant also performs administrative tasks, such as scheduling appointments, answering phone calls, and data entry.
Responsibilities- Escorts patients to exam rooms
- Cleans and stocks exam rooms
- Measures and records patient vital signs
- Obtains and processes blood samples as per NYULH policy
- Supports quality initiatives by following FGP guidelines for collecting and documenting information in the EMR
- Promotes a positive patient experience
- Communicates effectively with providers and administrative staff; escalate issues
- Answers phone calls
- Reviews and responds to inbasket messages
- Follows up on Rx refill requests
- Assists physician with patient intake and transcribing visit into EPIC
- Performs other duties as needed
- Completes necessary intake, including obtaining patient vital signs and other tests within defined scope of practice
- Validates patient medical record when accessing and updating information (name and date of birth)
- Maintains patient flow to and from exam rooms and treatment areas; escorts patients and specimens as needed
- Ensures exam rooms and treatment areas are cleaned per infection control standards after each patient
- Communicates the functionality and purpose of MyChart to patients during intake
- Ensures translation services or equipment are in place prior to the start of visit
- Assists with blood/specimen collection and ensures proper handling and processing of specimens per policy
- Performs Point of Care testing (e.g., EKG, glucose testing, pregnancy test, urinalysis) per policy, with documented competency as required
- Prepares the appropriate patient encounter ensuring all relevant information is up-to-date (bloodwork, radiology images, medications, past medical history)
- Reviews and imports any “Prepare for your Visit” or “Outside Information” and patient history prior to provider encounter
- Ensures logbooks related to equipment, specimen collection, and other clinical safety measures are followed per standards
- Supports best practice workflows for MIPS by updating medical records with vital signs and histories; may scan or upload diagnostic reports and link to orders in Epic
- Maintains patient privacy in accordance with HIPAA standards
- Handles appropriate patient calls and documents outcomes of patient communications; refer all clinical questions/concerns to RN/Provider
- Assists with inbasket message management and related tasks per best practices
- Utilizes EPIC to review and update patient records and maintains communication with peers and supervisors related to patient care
- Assists physicians with procedures and/or setup as needed
- Stocks exam/treatment rooms and supply closets with medical supplies and equipment; communicates needs for replenishment
- Cleans and sterilizes designated equipment after use per policy and with documented competency
- Supports clinical quality management by maintaining documentation and supplies
- Reviews downtime procedures as related to patient visits
- Completes annual competencies (Fire Safety, Hazardous Waste, HIPAA compliance, etc.)
