Laboratory Technologist - Histology - Full Time, Days

NYU Langone Health – NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk, Long Island, New York

Salary: $99,938.48 - $ annually

Position Summary

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Laboratory Technologist - Histology. In this role, you will perform clinical laboratory tests, analyze results, perform quality control, and maintain instrumentation. You will work under general supervision and ensure accuracy of test results.

Job Responsibilities
  • Apply a basic level of knowledge of methods and clinical relevance of tests performed in your area of responsibility.
  • Perform all preventive maintenance on schedule in accordance with laboratory procedure.
  • Recognize abnormal instrument or test performance and correct issues before releasing results.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting procedures and seek assistance when necessary.
  • Monitor reagent and supply inventory and inform supervisor of needs.
  • Work effectively in high-pressure situations and maintain composure during high volume of work.
  • Organize work so others can easily work with you and cover for you in your absence.
  • Verify and process specimens in an organized and timely manner.
  • Perform phlebotomy when required with expertise.
  • Follow all procedures accurately.
  • Perform all test procedures accurately.

  • Perform quality control according to laboratory protocol.
  • Document quality control.
  • Document corrective action when needed.
  • Follow laboratory procedure when quality control fails.
  • Apply knowledge of test interrelationships and ensure results are accurate.

  • Communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Listen attentively and follow directions.
  • Demonstrate proper telephone techniques and etiquette.
  • Effectively utilize the computer to process specimens, report results and access information.
  • Communicate ideas and suggestions with a positive intent.

  • Work well in cooperation with others.
  • Communicate knowledge and demonstrate procedures effectively to coworkers and students.
  • Call critical values to designated contact person and record in critical value book.
  • Follow computer downtime procedures when the computer is not operational.
  • Demonstrate ability to utilize technical communication (procedure manual etc.) in performing duties.

Analytical Skills
  • Demonstrate the ability to analyze problems to determine the cause and find solutions.
  • Follow a logical process to problem resolution.
  • Use all available resources to solve problems including manuals and manufacturer's technical services.
  • Display knowledge of mathematical and statistical calculations to evaluate quality control and calculate patient results.
Other Functions and Performance Expectations
  • Maintain a consistent pattern of attendance.
  • Report to assigned area on time for scheduled shift.
  • Adhere to hospital/department dress code and arrive appropriately dressed, well groomed and neat.
  • Complete all hospital requirements at designated time (annual assessments, education, Med Net Tra ).
  • Conform to policies regarding confidentiality of information.
  • Follow call-in procedure when sick, late or absent.
Minimum Qualifications

BS in Medical Technology including a clinical internship or BS in a related discipline with one year supervised clinical laboratory experience.

NYS Education Department Clinical Laboratory Technologist License or Eligible.

Professional accreditation preferred.

Analytical skills necessary to analyze data and perform mathematical calculations.

Basic knowledge of computer fundamentals and experience with laboratory information systems.

Technical skills necessary to operate, maintain and troubleshoot instrumentation and perform routine and complex testing.

Effectively communicate detailed data and procedures.

Work effectively in high-pressure situations.

Excellent organizational skills.

Excellent interpersonal skills.

Perform supervisory responsibilities.

Preferred Licenses

Clinical Lab Technologist – NYS.
