HOURS OF WORK: Four (4) tours of ten hours and sixteen minutes with three (3) consecutive rest days.

Summary

The Department is seeking qualified Sergeants who are interested in being considered for assignment to the Professional Development Section. The primary goals of the unit are to provide specific job training that will improve the safety, performance, and proficiency of its Officers and to ensure the Department’s philosophy and standard operating procedures are clearly understood. Professional Development personnel will be assigned to work four tours of ten hours and sixteen minutes with three consecutive rest days.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist the Professional Development Section in overseeing In-Service, Recruit, and Tactical Training Operations.
  • Supervise and train staff assigned to the Professional Development Section.
  • Coordinate and maintain daily Professional Development Section schedules.
  • Monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of officer training delivery methods and procedures.
  • Supervisors within the division will oversee Professional Development Section instructors and may provide administrative oversight for the sub-unit and/or conduct training, depending on the nature of the assignment. In some cases, the supervisor’s role may be primarily administrative rather than serving as a training instructor
  • Oversee facility maintenance and ensure safety plans are being adhered to within the Police Academy.
  • Supervise and direct numerous subordinates at multiple MTA and or Law Enforcement locations.
  • Oversee the development of all MTA Police Lesson Plans in accordance with DCJS standards.
  • Act as liaison between the MTAPD and outside Law Enforcement Agency training staff.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of MTA Courses being offered within the Department.
  • Responsible for attending Training Conferences and Seminars to ensure all Department members are trained in compliance with the most current

    New York State Department of Criminal Justice Law Enforcement Regulations.
Qualifications

Each Member must, at a minimum, have the following qualifications to be considered for appointment:

  • Must have 3 or more years of MTAPD experience.
  • Must be a current MTAPD Sergeant (with or without Professional Development Section Experience) or a Police Officer with Professional Development Section Experience and on the current Sergeant promotional list. Current MTAPD Sergeants without Professional Development Section experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Candidates will be required to pass the Cooper Standards Physical Fitness Test at 50% standards to be eligible to sit for an interview. Current members who are certified NYDCJS Physical Fitness Instructors are exempt from this requirement.
  • Must maintain peak physical condition and present as such.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in preparing and presenting reports.
  • Demonstrated administrative skills such asscheduling andrecord keeping.
  • Abilityto interact and communicate effectively with trainee officers and other agency representatives.
  • Successfully complete a panel interview.
Preferred Qualifications
  • NYSDCJS General Topics Instructor certification preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the management of the Basic Course for Police Officers as dictated by NYSDCJS.
  • Working knowledge of New York State DCJS Training and Accreditation Standards.
  • Knowledge of procurement procedures, including writing specifications for equipment, preparing training materials, and correspondence.
  • Previous experience inthe MTAPD Training unit, specifically NYPD recruit training, preferred.
  • Candidates who are classified as “Doctor Certified” or “Chronic Sick” or who have a history of substantiated discipline will be subject to review based on the underlying circumstances regarding classification and may be disqualified at any stage of the selection process.
