Associate Investigator

The Candidate Assessment Division is responsible for overseeing the character investigation, physical agility testing, medical screening, and psychological testing of candidates seeking uniformed and civilian employment with the New York City Police Department.

Under supervision, with latitude for independent initiative and judgment, these positions will perform professional work of more than ordinary difficulty in the field of investigation; review case records and reports and, based thereon, make recommendations as to action to be taken. May be assigned to investigations which are more than ordinary difficulty by reason of greater complexity or hazard; make emergency and special investigations;

prepare written and statistical reports by utilizing computer systems to assist the processing of investigations; supervise a small unit in conducting routine investigations. In the temporary absence of their supervisors, may assume the duties of that position, and perform related work.

• A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and five years of satisfactory, full-time experience as an investigator evaluating credit worthiness, searching for assets, verifying information concerning education, experience, and other personal qualifications bearing upon character and fitness for employment, or performing investigations involving the research, compilation and/or location of evidence or information in order to build a case or uncover activities of a criminal, corrupt, unlawful or unethical nature;

• An associate degree or 60 semester credits from an accredited college and four years of satisfactory, full-time experience as described in "1" above; or
• A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of satisfactory, full-time experience as described in "1" above; or
• Education and/or experience equivalent to "1", "2", or "3" above.

Potential applicants should have a strong work ethic, good interpersonal skills, and excellent time management. Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel preferred.
