The New York City and Vicinity District Council of Carpenters, one of the most influential labor unions in New York State, is seeking a driven, politically savvy professional to join our team as Deputy Political Director. This is a high-impact role for an ambitious individual ready to operate at the intersection of labor, politics, and policy in one of the most dynamic political environments in the world.
The right candidate will play a meaningful role in shaping the legislative and electoral agenda of an organization that represents tens of thousands of working men and women across New York City and the surrounding region.
Working closely with the Political Director, you will help lead the Council's political and advocacy operations across the city, state, and federal levels. Your responsibilities will include:
- Building and sustaining relationships with elected officials and senior staff across all levels of government, serving as a trusted representative of the Council's interests.
- Developing and advancing policy initiatives that benefit our members, while analyzing the impact of proposed legislative and regulatory changes on the union and the broader construction industry.
- Managing advocacy relationships between the membership and elected officials, community organizations, industry partners, and other key stakeholders.
- Coordinating political field operations — including lobby visits, phone banking, rallies, and get-out-the-vote campaigns — in support of the Council's legislative, regulatory, and electoral priorities.
- Supporting organizing campaigns and high-visibility public events, including press conferences and targeted employer activity.
- Preparing and filing all required periodic reports for political action committee expenditures with the NYS Board of Elections and other relevant authorities.
- Overseeing NYS lobbyist registration and reporting compliance.
- A minimum of two years of experience in government, organized labor, politics, or policy advocacy; experience in City, State, or Federal politics strongly preferred.
- A bachelor's degree preferred; a high school diploma or GED is required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling messages for a wide range of audiences.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel;
PowerPoint experience preferred. - Working knowledge of VAN (Voter Activation Network) or similar political organizing tools is a plus.
- A confident, outgoing, and energetic presence — someone who is comfortable building relationships at every level of the political landscape.
- Sense of humor strongly encouraged.
- Willingness to travel occasionally and work non-traditional hours during campaign season.
