SUMMARY

The MTA Police Department is seeking qualified members from the rank of Sergeant who are interested in being assigned as a Detective Sergeant. MTA Police Detective Sergeants typically perform duties in business attire or plain clothes depending on assignment but may be required to wear authorized uniforms when directed to do so by a member of the ISB Command Staff or higher authority.

The position duties range from administrative to field police work.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supervise criminal, non-criminal and warrant investigations relating to MTA Agencies and properties. They are fully commissioned officers in both New York and Connecticut and are expected to fully function as a law enforcement official.
  • MTA Police Detective Sergeants may also supervise the preparation of, or review various police reports, forms and logs and various support operations that the department may coordinate with other law enforcement agencies and public emergency response groups.
  • Detective Sergeants assess local area conditions and coordinate their subordinates' activities in the field, supervise crime searches and arrests, provide supervisory review of investigations conducted by uniformed members, including the safeguarding, processing, collecting and cataloging of evidence.
  • Conduct regular supervisory case reviews in accordance with current ISB procedures
  • Supervise personnel to ensure adequate staffing levels and equitable distribution of case load
  • Supervise subordinate overtime to ensure excessive overtime is avoided.
  • Must be able to plan and execute tactical operations relating to probable cause and warrant apprehensions.
  • Must maintain all departmental databases related to NY State and Connecticut warrants.
  • Must be able to work any day of the week, during any time period and often outdoors during inclement weather. Detective Sergeants must be able to deal with emergency situations and possibly hostile individuals.
  • Must be willing to be placed in an on-call status by authorization of the Chief of Police.
  • The nature of the work is dangerous and requires the ability to make quick and accurate judgments in emergency situations.
  • Detectives Sergeants are required to follow procedures and policy that are set out in the collective bargaining agreements and by MTA Police Management.
QUALIFICATIONS

Interested members must, at a minimum, possess the following qualifications to be considered for this position:

  • Must hold the current rank of Sergeant in the MTAPD or hold the current rank of Detective for at least one (1) year and must be on a current promotional Sergeant’s list. (

    Note:

    Detectives will not get promoted until their list number is reached on the Sergeant’s promotional list.)
  • Be able to demonstrate strong supervisory communication, inter-personal, multi-tasking, and leadership skills.
  • Must show demonstrated writing ability as well as exhibit proficiency in report writing.
  • Flexibility to work various tours, various work locations and be willing to be "on-call" based on the needs of the Department.
  • The ability to travel from residence to incidents within the MTAPD’s service area in a reasonable time.
  • Must have extensive knowledge of the New York State and Connecticut criminal law statutes.
  • Must have extensive knowledge of the New York State and Connecticut Criminal Procedure Law
  • Candidates who have recent substantiated discipline/suspension, negative supervisor reviews and/or who have a documented history of lateness or absenteeism related to non-justifiable excessive sick records may be removed from interview consideration.
  • Cannot not be designated “chronic sick” anytime during the application and/or selection process.
  • Omission of documented disciplinary records will result in your disqualification.
  • Must be recommended or highly recommended by the unit commander/regional chief.
  • Must have a strong enforcement history
  • Must have experience working with other law enforcement agencies and prosecutorial entities.
  • Candidate must meet qualifications to be granted an interview.
  • Candidate must successfully complete the panel interview to be considered for the position.
