Responsibilities
- Establish and maintain internal accounting policies and controls to support accurate financial reporting and protect organizational assets. Maintain a strong understanding of the general ledger structure and financial reporting processes.
- Support the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities, including assisting with the preparation of interim financial reports and related schedules.
- Partner with the grants and contracts function to analyze budgets, monitor program spending, and review financial performance against funding requirements.
- Provide support in the administration of government-funded programs and agreements, including assistance with claims, budget preparation, and financial tracking.
- Provide guidance to payroll and accounts payable personnel to ensure transactions are processed accurately and efficiently. Review existing procedures and recommend improvements to enhance workflow and internal controls.
- Assist with coordination of the annual external audit by preparing schedules, compiling requested documentation, and supporting audit inquiries. Participate in the preparation of annual tax filings, including information required for Form 990 and Form 1099 reporting.
- Oversee financial monitoring and reporting related to the organization’s property and rental activities.
- Monitor cash flow and liquidity, including oversight of banking relationships and credit facilities. Provide administrative support related to insurance policies and employee retirement programs.
- Participate in additional accounting or finance projects and responsibilities as needed.
- Directly supervise a small accounting team and coordinate with external service providers and vendors as required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
- Approximately 5–7 years of progressive accounting or financial management experience
, including exposure to nonprofit accounting and fund-based reporting
. - Experience working with government-funded programs, grants, or cost-reimbursable contracts is preferred.
- Strong technical proficiency with Excel, Microsoft Office applications, and accounting systems (experience with nonprofit accounting platforms is a plus).
- Solid understanding of GAAP, audit standards, and internal control frameworks
. - Ability to work with federal, state, and local funding sources
, including financial reporting and compliance requirements. - Strong communication skills with the ability to present financial information clearly to internal stakeholders.
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
