Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC), a Tony Award–winning nonprofit theatre dedicated to the production of contemporary plays and musical, seeks a Controller to join its Business Department.
For over fifty years, MTC has been the creative and artistic home for America’s most gifted theatrical artists, producing works of the highest quality by American and international playwrights. MTC produces up to eight plays annually in Broadway’s restored Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on West 47th Street and Off-Broadway at the historic NY City Center complex on West 55th Street.
The Controller plays a key leadership role within the Business Department, overseeing day-to-day accounting operations and ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of MTC’s financial reporting. Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Controller manages core accounting functions, supervises staff, supports the annual audit and tax filings, and works collaboratively across departments to strengthen internal controls, processes, and financial systems in a complex, fast-paced nonprofit theatre environment.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:Accounting Operations.
Oversees daily accounting activities including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll coordination, and cash receipts. Ensures transactions are recorded accurately and in accordance with nonprofit GAAP.
Financial Close & Reporting.Manages the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes. Reviews balance sheet reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statements to ensure accuracy and consistency. Prepares internal financial reports and analyses for the Director of Finance and senior leadership.
Audit & Compliance.Serves as a primary point of contact for the annual external audit and supports preparation of the Form 990 and other required filings. Ensures compliance with applicable laws, regulations, grant requirements, and internal accounting policies.
Supervision & Team Leadership.Supervises accounting staff within the Business Department, providing guidance, training, and performance management. Fosters a collaborative, detail-oriented, and service-minded team culture.
Process Improvement & Controls.Assists in developing, implementing, and maintaining strong internal controls. Identifies opportunities to improve workflows, documentation, and financial systems to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and transparency.
Cross-Departmental Support.Works closely with colleagues across the organization to provide clear financial guidance, respond to inquiries, and support operational needs, including budgeting and forecasting processes as assigned.
EXPERIENCE ANDCOMPETENCIES:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA or advanced degree a plus.
- Minimum 5–7 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit, performing arts, or similarly complex organization.
- Strong working knowledge of nonprofit GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
- Demonstrated experience managing month-end and year-end close processes.
- Prior experience supervising staff and supporting audits.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with strong attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with non-financial colleagues.
- High proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting systems; experience with Microsoft Great Plains and Tessitura strongly preferred.
