Project Accountant – Architecture & Engineering

A well-established New York City–based Architecture & Engineering firm is seeking an experienced Project Accountant to support a growing portfolio of design and consulting engagements. The firm delivers complex commercial, infrastructure, and public-sector projects and is known for technical excellence, long-standing client relationships, and disciplined financial oversight.
With a strong backlog and steady project flow, the organization places significant emphasis on accurate project reporting, fee management, and alignment between finance and project leadership.
The OpportunityThis is a highly visible, project-facing accounting role responsible for overseeing the financial performance of active design and consulting projects. The Project Accountant will work closely with Project Managers, Principals, and senior finance leadership to ensure billing accuracy, contract compliance, and real-time visibility into project profitability.
The position is ideal for someone with experience in professional services or A/E project accounting who thrives in a deadline-driven, collaborative environment.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare and process monthly client invoices, including time-and-expense and percentage-of-completion billing
- Monitor project budgets, fee burn, and contract values
- Track labor utilization, multipliers, and consultant costs
- Maintain accurate project setup, contract modifications, and change orders within the accounting system
- Perform budget-to-actual analysis and provide variance explanations
- Support revenue recognition in accordance with GAAP for professional services
- Partner with Project Managers to review WIP, unbilled revenue, and accounts receivable aging
- Assist with cash flow forecasting and fee projections
- Coordinate with the Controller and CFO on month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes
- Contribute to financial reporting and overall project P&L analysis
- Strong project accounting experience within Architecture, Engineering, or professional services
- Solid understanding of project-based revenue recognition and fee management
- Experience working closely with Project Managers and technical teams
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple deadlines
- Strong communication skills and collaborative mindset
- Experience with Deltek (Ajera, Vision, or Vantagepoint) preferred;
Sage or similar systems a plus
