SummaryOur Client, a NYC-based insurance business, is seeking a Director, Investment Operations to own day-to-day investment operations, oversee sub-advisors, and lead cross-functional initiatives supporting the firm's insurance balance sheet.
This role sits at the center of the investment ecosystem. Specifically, it connects front-office execution, middle-office controls, and back-office accounting and reporting.
Reporting to the Head of Investments, with a dotted line to the Controller, this leader will build scalable operational infrastructure, strengthen controls, and ensure data integrity across systems, managers, and custodians. In parallel, the role partners closely with Finance, Risk, and Technology to support a growing platform.
Key Responsibilities Investment Operations- Oversee trade capture, affirmation/confirmation, and settlement across fixed income, equities, funds, private placements, and derivatives
- Ensure accurate and timely daily cash positions and P&L reconciliations across sub-advisors, custodians, investment accounting systems, and data warehouses
- Manage cash and securities movements as directed; additionally, run daily and weekly cash forecasting
- Coordinate collateral and margin activity to support derivative and liquidity needs
- Monitor investment guidelines and exposure limits; promptly elevate breaches and track remediation
- Own corporate actions processing, pricing validation and overrides, and end-of-day close controls
- Support RBC, ALM, and liquidity reporting by delivering accurate position, valuation, and cash data
- Serve as the primary operational and accounting point of contact for external investment managers
- Review performance, attribution, mandate compliance, cash activity, and fee invoices
- Validate sub-advisor fee calculations and ensure timely payment
- DDQs
- SOC 1 / Type II reviews
- Drive sub-advisor onboarding and offboarding, including guideline setup and ongoing updates
- Own investment data flows across:
- Investment accounting systems (e.g., Clearwater)
- OMS platforms (e.g., Aladdin)
- Custodians
- Enterprise data warehouses
- Third-party manager reporting
- Partner with Technology to enhance data models, controls, and reconciliation logic
- Deliver dashboards and analytics supporting exposure, liquidity, and performance monitoring
- Automate recurring operational, management, and regulatory reports
- Lead system implementations and upgrades across OMS, investment accounting, performance, and data platforms
- Map, document, and optimize core investment operations processes, including:
- Close and reconciliation
- Pricing and valuation
- Guideline monitoring and controls
- 6-10 years of experience in investment operations and/or investment accounting within insurance and/or asset management
- Strong working knowledge of fixed income instruments and derivatives
- Advanced Excel skills; additionally, experience with SQL and/or BI tools (Power BI, Tableau, Looker) strongly preferred
- Demonstrated success leading cross-functional initiatives and strengthening operational controls
- CPA or CFA designation, or progress toward either; FRM a plus
- STAT and GAAP accounting experience for invested assets
- Working knowledge of:
- RBC
- ALM concepts
- Liquidity stress testing
- Performance measurement
- Prior experience overseeing external sub-advisors
- Investment operations run accurately, timely, and with strong controls
- Data flows remain clean, reliable, and consistent across systems, managers, and custodians
- Sub-advisors operate within mandates and maintain strong operational governance
- Finance, Risk, and Investments rely confidently on investment data for reporting and decision-making
- Systems, processes, and controls scale effectively as the investment platform grows
