The Hebrew Free Loan Society (HFLS) advances economic stability and opportunity for lower‑income New Yorkers within and beyond the Jewish community by making safe, affordable interest‑free loans.
HFLS is the largest nonprofit interest‑free lender in the United States. We have been making loans based on financial need to borrowers of all backgrounds since 1892. Our repayment rate is 99%, the result of a unique lending model that relies on guarantors to prevent default. As our loans are repaid, the capital is lent out again and again, helping more people and multiplying impact over time.
This year HFLS will lend approximately $35 million to nearly 2,000 households, and we strive to help more people every year.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The Collections Officer will help manage a large, growing, and diverse portfolio of outstanding interest‑free loans, specifically those that are in bad standing as a result of failed monthly payments. They will ensure HFLS is responsive to the needs of borrowers who are struggling to repay their loans while striving to maintain the organization’s exceptionally high repayment rate.
Responsibilities:
- Work with borrowers who have loans in bad standing (and their guarantors) to help them get back on track with repayments as quickly as possible.
- Serve as primary contact for/with HFLS’s external collections agency, sending information for new loans in default; reviewing monthly payments, commission, and portfolio reports; and conducting reconciliation of HFLS and agency data.
- Maintain up‑to‑date collections‑related information in the HFLS loan management system, including entry of external collections agency payments, commissions, and updates; payment plans; write offs; and loan forgiveness.
- Review and provide analysis of the monthly Bad Standings report; recommend loans for write off, collections agency, or legal action.
