A global commodities trading house is seeking a Battery Metals Trader to join their global metals trading team. This person will work closely with the Executive Team, North American colleagues, as well as international battery metals and lithium trading teams across the globe.
The role will focus on sourcing, marketing, and trading lithium raw materials and refined products, supporting battery supply chains across EV, energy storage, and industrial end-markets across North America and international markets.
This position combines market development, physical trading, and commercial structuring, with close interaction across logistics, risk, operations, and finance teams. The successful candidate will play a key role in expanding the firm’s presence in battery metals and base metals.
Key Responsibilities Trading & Market Development- Execute physical lithium transactions (e.g. spodumene, lithium carbonate, lithium hydroxide)
- Develop and manage relationships with producers, converters, processors, OEMs, and end-users
- Identify arbitrage, term supply, and structured offtake opportunities across global markets
- Build a trading book aligned with the firm’s risk appetite and capital framework
- Negotiate contracts covering pricing formulas, quality specs, logistics, and payment terms
- Manage price risk exposure using appropriate hedging and risk-mitigation strategies
- Work closely with internal risk, legal, operations, and credit teams to structure compliant trades
- Monitor counter party risk, inventory exposure, and market liquidity
- Track global lithium supply/demand dynamics, pricing mechanisms, and policy developments
- Monitor upstream mining activity, midstream conversion capacity, and downstream battery demand
- Provide regular market insights and strategic input to senior trading leadership
- < 8 years of experience in physical commodities trading, metals, mining, or related markets
- Junior candidates are encouraged to apply and may be considered for a different Trading position within this team
- Direct experience trading lithium or closely related battery metals preferred
- Strong understanding of global lithium supply chains and pricing mechanisms
- Proven ability to originate deals and manage commercial relationships
- Strong commercial judgement, negotiation skills, and risk awareness
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree a plus
