Gustavo Dudamel will become the Philharmonic’s Oscar L. Tang and H.M. Agnes Hsu-Tang Music and Artistic Director in the 2026–27 season.
NY Phil seeks a Controller. The Controller is a key member of the Finance Department reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, responsible for ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of all financial operations at the NY Phil. This role manages accounting processes, compliance, and internal controls, and partners closely with the CFO and other stakeholders to support the organization’s mission. The NY Phil is a not-for-profit organization, has been exempt from federal income taxes under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (the Code) since 1928.

Your Day-to-Day Financial Operations & Accounting- Lead day-to-day accounting operations, including month-end close and general ledger management
- Oversee fixed assets, Cap Ex budgeting, reconciliations, and journal entry approvals
- Supervise accounting staff and serve as payroll backup as needed
- Ensure adherence to financial policies, internal controls, and best practices
- Lead annual financial, pension, and annuity audits
- Oversee preparation of IRS Form 990 and regulatory filings
- Manage grant reporting, charitable registrations, and compliance requirements
- Track contribution revenue releases to ensure accurate, timely reporting
- Manage and mentor a team of four, fostering a collaborative, high-performance culture
- Develop and maintain training materials to ensure consistency and excellence across the team
- Partner on financial systems optimization and process improvements
- Support special projects including royalties tracking and pension documentation
- Participate in quarterly reforecast meetings, providing financial insight and analysis
- Lead completion of the annual League of American Orchestras survey
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA preferred
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with nonprofit experience strongly preferred. 3 years in a Controller role.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting, and financial reporting
- Experience with audit coordination, tax filings (Form 990), and endowment/pension accounting
- Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., Sage Intacct, Tessitura) and advanced Excel skills
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams and collaborate across departments
