Position: Ariva Tax Volunteer (VITA Program)
Location: New York

Overview

Ariva operates a free income tax assistance program (VITA program), as part of NYC Free Tax Coalition. Ariva is a human services organization serving high‑need underserved communities in the Bronx. Core mission: strengthen financial stability of low‑income individuals and families in Bronx.

Seasonal VITA Program Tax Preparers (January–April 2026)

Ariva has several seasonal openings. Most seasonal staff and volunteers initially have no prior experience. You must complete our free training to become an IRS‑certified tax preparer before volunteering.

Location

Program is concentrated in South Bronx; one location in Manhattan.

Responsibilities
  • Review intake:
    Review client's completed IRS paper intake form; ensure all fields filled completely and thoroughly. Verify client's identification and tax documents.
  • Prepare returns:
    Utilize IRS‑approved software (Taxslayer) to prepare clients' Federal and NYS returns for e‑filing or paper filing. Stay up to date on IRS rules and regulations as they relate to VITA tax preparation.
Commitment
  • Weekly 4 or 6‑hour shift (January–April 2026) in person.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Patience, good sense of humor.
  • Professional demeanor and good work ethic.
  • Fluency in Spanish highly desirable. Prior experience with VITA program a plus.

Schedule and Availability
