Overview
The Chautauqua School of Music provides students from around the world the opportunity to study with world-renowned teachers. The Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra is the professional orchestra of Chautauqua Institution, performing major symphonic repertoire and collaborating with Opera and visiting dance companies. The school and orchestra are part of the Performing and Visual Arts department, whose mission is to expand the lives of our audience (and employees) within and beyond the Institution’s gates through the power of the performing and visual arts.
About Your Compensation
Compensation for this position starts at $17.50/Hour and, with demonstrated experience and qualifications, candidates may earn up to $20.00/Hour.
About Your Work Day- Music Procurement
- Serves as primary point of responsibility for all tasks related to procurement, preparation and maintenance of MSFO, School of Music, and Community Band music. Procurement may be done remotely prior to being on-site in June.
- Works closely with the Programming Office and MSFO Music Director, guest artists and Chautauqua Opera staff to determine the need to purchase or rent music for the season, in accord with budgetary limitations.
- Effects all music rentals and applies for grand rights, as needed. Communicates with publishers regarding broadcasts or streaming.
- Performs inventory on all music at retrieval/receipt and prior to return.
- Distributes parts to principal strings for bowings.
- Provides access to scores and parts to the orchestra with accurate rehearsal markings, appropriate transpositions, bowings and indications for beginning, ending, cuts and repeats.
- Sets out and collects music for all MSFO services. Delivers and retrieves scores for conductors and soloists.
- Organization
- Organizes and prioritizes all processes of the MSFO library and part markers.
- Organizes information and maintains archive of all season repertoire using Chautauqua Institution’s licensed software, currently Sharepoint and Arts vision.
- Compiles musicians’ program sheets, including instrumentation and clarifications of stop, start, cuts and repeats. Maintains record of any music borrowed in advance by musicians or conductors.
- Maintains stock of materials for printing, binding, marking music and oversees any other library staff in those efforts.
- Communication and Planning
- Supports work of all musicians and staff to achieve successful MSFO performances.
- Works with string principals in managing the coordination of bowings.
- Interaction and collaboration
- Works under the guidance of the CSO principal librarian in completing MSFO work, as needed.
- Works in collaboration with student librarians who are supervised by Manager of Student Services.
- Supports the work of the CSO library by scanning, printing, binding and marking works, as needed.
Chautauqua Institution’s Referral Bonus Program is a talent solution to recruit, develop, and retain a diverse workforce that encompasses all the skills and experience necessary to deliver on our goals and objectives. Chautauqua Institution and Chautauqua Hotel Company offer flexible schedules, full and part-time, for seasonal employment during summer operations starting annually each June and concluding in August. Seasonal employment may be available earlier (pre-season) and beyond season (post-season) based on business needs and candidate availability.
