About Voyant
Voyant Photonics, based in the heart of New York City, is transforming machine perception with a new class of LiDAR devices that are compact enough to fit in the palm of your hand and powerful enough to measure range, velocity, and reflectivity with unparalleled accuracy. By leveraging cutting‑edge silicon photonic chips smaller than your fingertip, we deliver sensors that are not only revolutionary in performance but also affordable enough to integrate into any system.
Our technology disrupts the status quo of bulky, expensive, and power‑hungry LiDAR systems, making high‑precision sensing accessible for widespread adoption in robotics, autonomous vehicles, drones, industrial automation, and beyond.
Why Join us?At Voyant, you’ll be part of a team turning cutting‑edge research into real‑world products. As a growing startup, we offer interns the chance to make a meaningful impact, work closely with senior engineers, and learn what it takes to build disruptive sensing technology. This is more than an internship — it’s a chance to grow your technical skills and career in one of the most exciting fields of hardware innovation.
Plus, we love to grow our team from within, and great interns often become great full‑time teammates—we’re always excited to make that happen.
Position OverviewWe are seeking a motivated and hands‑on LiDAR Test Engineering Intern to join our team and directly contribute to the development of our next‑generation LiDAR modules. This is a unique opportunity to gain real‑world experience in a fast‑growing startup, working with disruptive sensing technology at the intersection of photonics, hardware, and software integration.
As an intern, you will take on a highly cross‑disciplinary, hands‑on role. Your primary project will involve designing and building a complete module test fixture—from electrical and mechanical design to data collection and analysis. This internship is an excellent opportunity to apply engineering fundamentals while collaborating across teams in a fast‑paced environment.
To be successful, you should highlight on your resume a project you’ve built that combines electrical, mechanical, and software/firmware elements. During the interview process, we will ask you to walk us through your design choices, trade‑offs, and problem‑solving approach. We are looking for resourceful, curious, and driven engineers who thrive on building and testing real systems.
Location:NYC Responsibilities:
- Design & Build Test Fixture
- Select and integrate electrical and mechanical connectors for module interface
- Design and layout a custom PCB for testing functionality and signal access
- Develop a mechanical enclosure for the test fixture ensuring ease of use and robustness
- Test Automation & Data Handling
- Write scripts to automate test execution and collect module performance data
- Implement data storage and logging infrastructure for traceability
- Perform initial data analysis (e.g., signal integrity, power, thermal, or optical performance) and summarize results for the engineering team
- Collaboration & Reporting
- Work with hardware, photonics, and systems engineers to ensure fixture validity and coverage
- Document test plans, fixture schematics, and software in a reproducible, maintainable format
- Present findings and recommendations to the team in a clear and structured manner
- Currently pursuing a BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field
- Coursework or project experience in PCB design, mechanical CAD, or test fixture development
- Familiarity with scripting languages such as Python or MATLAB for data collection and analysis
- Comfort with basic lab equipment (oscilloscopes, power supplies, multimeters, etc.)
- Strong problem‑solving skills and eagerness to work hands‑on in a lab environment
Qualification:
- Experience with test automation frameworks (e.g., PyVISA, LabVIEW, or custom Python libraries)
- Exposure to signal integrity, optics, or sensor systems
- Previous internship or project work involving both mechanical and electrical design
- Strong written documentation and data analysis skills
- Team events and company…
