Vertical Structures Intern - Summer

ABOUT THE POSITION

VHB's NYC, NY, office is looking for a Vertical Structures Intern to join our team. The successful intern candidate will learn technical skills and computational software programs necessary to assist in the completion of transportation projects throughout the state and northeast region.

Position is open for spring through summer 2026.

Responsibilities

Collaborate with numerous VHB staff, clients, and consultants to advance projects in a timely manner.
• Assist engineers with creation of construction documents utilizing CAD and BIM software.
• Perform structural analysis, design, and detailing tasks as assigned by senior structural engineers.
• Prepare written documents, summarize information collected by others, and assemble reports.

Desired Skills and Attributes

• Strong verbal and written communication skills to coordinate design both internally with VHB staff and externally with clients and other design professionals.
• Exhibits initiative and high attention to precision and accuracy while completing assigned tasks.
• Able to follow instructions on timelines of deliverables, seek guidance when needed, and escalate issues appropriately if required.
• Introductory knowledge of design of structural systems using various materials such as steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, and timber.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, One Note, Outlook, etc).
• Limited experience in structural analysis, drafting, and design development tasks at various project stages.

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a B.S. or M.S. in Civil/Structural Engineering or Architectural Engineering from an ABET accredited program with a focus in structural coursework
• Familiarity with drawing production software and BIM software such as AutoCAD, Microstation, and Revit is a plus.
• Familiarity with structural analysis and design software such as RISA 3D, Ram Structural System, Enercalc, SAP
  2000, etc is a plus.

Our best estimate of the hourly salary range for this position located in New York is $19/hr - $30/hr the final compensation will be based on a variety of factors such as individual qualifications, education, and experience.
