The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City.
The Bureau of Water Supply seeks to hire three (3) Watershed Maintainers within the Water Operations Directorate, for positions located in Valhalla, New York.
The Bureau of Water Supply, Drinking Water Operations South, is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the treatment facilities located in Westchester County. The core mission is to protect the public and provide clean drinking water to approximately 9 million New York City residents and more than 1 million people in Upstate New York. Treatment processes include filtration, chemical addition and/or UV disinfection.
Drinking Water Operations also maintains treatment equipment, lands and facilities. These functions are a vital part of New York City’s water supply which must be provided 24 hours a day, seven days per week.
- Inspecting reservoirs, streams, water supply lands, groundwater systems and watersheds for compliance and conformity to rules and regulations.
- Maintaining and repairing the lands, roads, bridges, dams and other structures and equipment in the watershed area, aqueduct and reservoir systems.
- Operating motor vehicles, snow removal equipment and other motor‑powered equipment. They may clean and maintain facility grounds, structures and equipment.
- Mowing, pruning, cultivating and maintaining lawns, shrubs, trees and grades.
- Maintaining records of operation, supplies and inventory needed.
- Performing the maintenance, inspection of power tools and operation of field or other equipment.
- Serving as a member of the Emergency Response Team.
- Complying with all environmental, health and safety laws, agency policies, rules and regulations.
- Monitoring and controlling the various process control equipment and treatment systems using various computer‑based controls including the Process Monitoring and Control System (PMCS) or Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System (SCADA).
- Manually adjusting equipment to meet treatment demands.
- Performing simple calculations, taking water samples, maintaining control room and equipment logbooks, completing inspection and work ticket records and maintaining overall drinking water quality per regulatory and DEP requirements. Maintaining computer‑based recordkeeping.
- Loading, unloading and ensuring the feed of chemicals, such as chlorine, fluoride and alum, to water. Identifying and containing leaks using emergency equipment.
- Installing, maintaining and repairing equipment, fixtures, gauges, meters and other equipment relative to the watershed, reservoir and aqueduct systems.
- Painting structures, equipment, and fences.
- Performing work in permit confined spaces.
- Operating, servicing and maintaining various types of motorized vehicles and equipment including specialized mounted equipment, earthmoving equipment and towed or portable power equipment and attachments.
- Maintaining, installing and repairing storm water drains and appendages in the watershed area, aqueduct and reservoir systems. Engaging in excavating, sheathing and shoring using hand or powered tools.
- Assisting trades with installation of utilities.
- Engaging in logging and lumbering operations.
- Mixing concrete and preparing other materials in order to make repairs. Performing asphalt road repairs.
- Performing carpentry work and using power tools.
