Mechanical Inspector

Role Overview

The Mechanical Inspector provides specialized inspection, verification, and testing oversight for mechanical and HVAC systems on Building & Infrastructure projects throughout the Greater New York City Metropolitan Area. This role supports both Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) programs in accordance with 1 RCNY §101‑06, Chapter 17 of the NYC Building Code, the International Building Code (IBC), and applicable Mechanical Code and Energy Code requirements, as required by each project.

The Mechanical Systems Inspector is responsible for verifying that mechanical systems, equipment, and associated components are installed in strict conformance with approved design documents, shop drawings, specifications, manufacturer requirements, and code provisions. Systems may include HVAC equipment, ductwork, piping, boilers, chillers, air handling units, exhaust systems, controls, and energy‑related components.

This role requires maintaining an active on‑site presence during installation, testing, and commissioning activities, including witnessing functional performance testing, pressure testing, system start‑ups, and test‑and‑balance (TAB) activities. The inspector coordinates closely with contractors, construction managers, commissioning agents, testing firms, and client representatives to ensure all required inspections and tests are performed at the appropriate stages of work.

The Mechanical Systems Inspector plays a critical role in ensuring system performance, code compliance, life‑safety coordination, energy efficiency, and operational readiness, proactively identifying non‑conforming conditions, documenting deficiencies, issuing Non‑Conformance Reports (NCRs), and verifying corrective actions and re‑testing.

Work Responsibilities
  • Inspection of HVAC equipment installation, supports, and clearances
    • Verification of ductwork, piping, insulation, and labelling
    • Inspection of boilers, chillers, pumps, and mechanical room installations
    • Verification of fire/smoke dampers and coordination with fire protection systems
    • Oversight of controls, sensors, and system integration
  • Work hours may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, or night shifts depending on project requirements and concrete placement schedules.
  • Reporting & Documentation
    • Prepare and submit daily inspection and test reports within required timeframe.
    • Utilize client or company reporting platforms as required.
    • Maintain organized and auditable inspection records.
Requirements
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience inspecting construction work in the city of NY, varied in size and complexity. Projects may include commercial high‑rise buildings, residential towers, transportation infrastructure, utilities, institutional facilities, and public‑sector construction.
  • Familiarity with 101‑06 and Chapter 17 of the NYC building code and the International Building Code.
  • Holds OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification taken within the last 5 years.
  • Well versed in all aspects of construction and QA/QC responsibilities.
  • Familiarity with applicable Soils & Geotechnical Systems.
  • Training and/or knowledge in fall protection, scaffolding and ladders, & work‑zone safety.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Physical Abilities applicable to construction projects in the City of New York and the ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and navigate active construction sites, including climbing ladders, scaffolding, and walking uneven surfaces.
  • Currently holds certification as in one or more of the following:
    • AABC Test and Balance Technician Certification
    • Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering (accredited institution or equivalent)
    • ICC Certification as a Residential Mechanical Inspector
    • ICC Certification as a Commercial Mechanical Inspector
    • ICC Certification as a Commercial Building Inspector
