Job Description:

SUNY Polytechnic Institute's Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor of Aerospace Engineering. At present, Aerospace Engineering is a concentration in Mechanical Engineering but will pursue degree status soon. The successful candidate will support ABET accredited B.S. degree programs that address national and regional workforce needs and offers our graduates excellent employment opportunities.

The department is expanding rapidly, with new master's programs underway and a Ph.D. program in development within the next two years, providing significant opportunities to shape graduate education.

This position offers the chance to play a key role in a young, vibrant, and fast-growing department, with strong programs offering collaboration opportunities with other faculty members in Materials, Robotics & Advanced Manufacturing, and AI & Information Technology. Additionally, SUNY Poly supports centers in Safe and Secure Robotics, Sustainable Aerospace Energy, Global Advanced Manufacturing, Nature Inspired Engineering, and Smart Infrastructure and Sustainability.

SUNY Poly enjoys a large number of undergraduate students with aerospace interests. Emphasis on Project Based Learning attracts capable students and provides a strong learn-by-doing atmosphere.

The successful candidate will:

  • Demonstrate a commitment to excellent teaching in the area of aerodynamics, fluid mechanics, air vehicle design, and sustainable aviation
  • Have a track record of outstanding academic and scholarly achievements in aerospace engineering
  • Will be able to develop an externally funded research program.

The mechanical engineering program currently consists of six tenure-track or tenured faculty members, whose teaching and research expertise includes thermo fluids engineering, aerodynamics, aerospace, materials engineering, robotics, design, and manufacturing. It is expected that the successful candidate's research interests would complement the interests of existing engineering faculty at SUNY Poly.

Description of Duties:

  • Teach and develop curricula for a variety of undergraduate and graduate engineering courses in both lecture and laboratory settings.
  • Develop an externally funded scholarly research program in aerospace engineering incorporating graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Advise undergraduate students and assist with a variety of student club activities.
  • Work with the engineering faculty to maintain EAC-ABET accreditation.
  • Serve the College and community through outreach activities. During the first two years of the appointment, a reduced teaching load can be anticipated in order to provide an opportunity to establish a research program and develop courses.
