Job Summary
Working as the Chief Engineer, you will help to oversee and coordinate activities of the maintenance department working under the direction of the Director and/or Assistant Director.
Responsibilities- Plan, organize and control activities of the plant operations department under the guidelines of the Director of Plant Operations and Maintenance to keep staff engaged in maintaining, repairing, and renovating facility’s plant and facilities.
- Inspect equipment to determine operating condition and regulate the flow of gas, oil, and water for proper control of boilers and auxiliary equipment.
- Evaluate operating conditions by inspection and review of equipment logbooks to detect equipment malfunction.
- Perform daily inspections of equipment to determine the need for adjustments and repair.
- Make chemical tests of water in boilers and alter content of chemicals as required. Supervise internal and external cleaning of boilers.
- Monitor and maintain chilled water generation equipment and all related systems, including cooling towers, chilled water pumps, condenser water pumps, make‑up water pumps, domestic water pumps, sump pumps, ejector pumps, water storage systems, fire pumps, system strains and blowdowns.
- Use BAS and other operator computerized controls systems to make adjustments and monitor system operation.
- Takes remedial action as required in response to alarm conditions or system failures.
- Monitor and maintain as required other Central Plant equipment such as emergency generators, automatic switching equipment, Motor Control Centers, combustion air fans and Central Plant exhaust systems.
- Operate and monitor systems for the conveyance of medical gases such as medical air, medical vacuum, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, etc.
- Monitor and coordinate a variety of preventative maintenance, building, property repair, and improvement projects performed by vendors and contractors, inspect completed work and approve payment requests.
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or equivalent work experience.
- Stationary Engineer Licensed by the NYC Department of Buildings (preferred but not required).
- Refrigeration Engineer Licensed by the NYC Fire Department (preferred but not required).
- Must be able to obtain Certificate of Fitness A‑35, G‑71, G‑79 and P‑98 or equivalents within 90 days of appointment if requested by Facilities Management.
- Ability to meet deadlines and make sound decisions in stressful situations.
- Strong customer service skills required.
- Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form.
- Ability to multi‑task, organize, and establish priorities.

- Commitment to hands‑on, team‑oriented management.
- Experience in leading, training and mentoring others.
- Proficiency using the Internet and Microsoft Office programs including MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint and MS Outlook.
