Job Summary and Essential

Job Duties

The Optical Engineer is responsible for a variety of tasks within the optical engineering development process. The Optical Engineer will assess customer specifications for feasibility as well as work through design studies and tolerancing assessments to determine the best path forward for projects. The Optical Engineer will design multi element lenses in the UV, Visible and IR spectrum. They also will evaluate existing optical systems for their suitability to be manufactured with existing equipment or specifying new equipment and test setups where there may be gaps.

The Optical Engineer will collaborate with other internal groups to develop test plans, document requirements, and plan verification methods for optical instruments for delivery of prototypes intended to validate future production builds. This will be a primarily on‑site role with travel requirements of approximately 10%, including visits to customer sites or industry and educational conferences as needed.

The Sr Optical Engineer will:
  • Design multi-element optical lenses and assemblies.
  • Facilitate cross‑functional teams to plan workflow, adhering to customer‑established timelines while meeting real cost and delivery requirements.
  • Develop test documentation for internal use and compose test plans that meet customer requirements.
  • Help multi‑disciplinary teams solve complex problems, and report results verbally and in writing.
  • Prepare customer‑facing design review material and present findings in large group review settings.
  • Lead or support testing of prototype lenses.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Advancement within the Optical Engineering ranks is attained via increasing levels of responsibility and demonstration of leadership potential and effectiveness combined with added education, experience, industrial skills, math skills, and computing skills.

Education Requirements
  • B.S. in Optics, Physics, or equivalent academic program required.
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Optics preferred.
  • 5‑15 years’ experience in lens design using Zemax or Code V (Zemax preferred).
  • Image quality metrology experience, e.g., interferometry or MTF testing.
  • Demonstrated prototype and product build successes.
Minimum Requirements
  • Knowledge of imaging and non‑imaging optics and their quality metrics.
  • Knowledge of metrology techniques, instruments, methods for optical systems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent problem‑solving skills.
  • A highly developed set of interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to collect, interpret, document, and present data.
  • Ability to assess complex issues and develop appropriate solutions.
  • Ability to work and contribute in a team setting.
Desired experience
  • Previous design experience with telescope, catadioptric and off‑axis design forms a plus.
  • Previous design experience in the UV, Visible, and IR spectrums desired.
  • Previous experience with space applications a plus.
  • Prior experience as a program technical lead desired.
  • Familiarity with clean room protocols.
  • Experience creating optical drawings, preferably in the ISO
    10110 format.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Strong desire to learn new things through continuing education and training.
