Summary

The Project Management Trainee (PMT) is an entry‑level training position within RPS, designed to support the management of Force Account Capital Program projects. This role provides a structured, hands‑on learning environment for individuals seeking to build a career in project management in the railroad industry. Under the guidance of experienced project managers, the PMT will receive comprehensive on‑the‑job training to develop a foundational understanding of the MTA principles, policies, and procedures.

During the training period, the PMT will be embedded with several RPS groups, gaining exposure to different functions and applying knowledge learned within their field of interest as it relates to LIRR Force Account Projects.

Responsibilities
  • Gain an understanding of general project procedures, protocols, and processes with respect to project coordination, administration, and all aspects of project management through on‑the‑job training.
  • Observe and learn to gain an understanding of project management and the railroad industry. Develop positive working relationships. Assume responsibility and demonstrate initiative to learn and be productive.
  • Participate in developing, planning, reviewing, and coordinating elements of LIRR Force Account and Third‑Party Contract work for the LIRR, under its Capital Improvement Program.
  • Review specifications and drawings, maintain files of documents, and assist in the preparation of reports, presentations, research, and studies.
  • Learn and participate in the development of projects and reporting requirements of all types.
  • Assist in the development of office and field control‑related systems.
  • Assist in maintaining liaison between project management team members and internal railroad departments & disciplines.
  • Perform all other assignments at the request of management.
Qualifications

The following experience, education, and skills are required for this position:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Construction Management, or a Business‑related field.
  • Must possess the ability to be self‑motivated, assume a high degree of responsibility and work effectively under pressure.
  • Must possess strong administrative and coordination skills to organize reports.
  • Must be able to demonstrate oral and written communication and computer skills (Microsoft Word & Excel).
  • Must possess analytical and problem‑solving skills to recommend solutions to problems relating to improving office workflow.
  • Some experience reading specifications and interpreting construction plans.
  • Strong Business Skills (report writing, letter writing, filing, meeting minutes, and spreadsheets).
Preferred/Desirable
  • 6 months of prior related work experience.
  • Advanced Degree.
  • Professional License/ certification.

Wage progression for employees hired on or before September 24, 2014:
Step 1 – Entrance 6 Months ($33.23) Step 2 – 6 to 12 Months ($34.89) Step 3 – 12 to 18 Months ($36.63) Step 4 – 18 Months ($38.46) New wage progression for employees hired after September 24, 2014:
Step 1 – New WP – Entrance 6 Months ($33.23) Step 2 – New WP – 6 to 12 Months ($34.89) Step 3 – New WP – 12 to 18 Months ($36.63) Step 4 – New WP – 18 Months ($38.46).
