Assistant Resident Engineer – Water Division (NYCDEP Project, Staten Island, NY)
A leading municipal consulting firm is seeking an Assistant Resident Engineer with 5–10 years of experience to join our Water Division as part of our construction management team on a NYCDEP construction project in Staten Island, NY.
This is an exciting opportunity for a self‑motivated individual to join a highly qualified team supporting major municipal infrastructure work. As an Assistant Resident Engineer, you will apply your experience and technical knowledge of municipal infrastructure, water and wastewater facilities, and general building projects to help manage and execute construction activities under the supervision of the Resident Engineer.
Position Responsibilities
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
Manage day‑to‑day construction oversight and Assistant Resident Engineering activities on a major NYCDEP infrastructure upgrade contract.
Assist the Resident Engineer in managing inspection staff and ensuring delivery of daily inspector reports in accordance with client requirements.
Serve as liaison to design staff to address contractor RFIs and review shop drawings.
Support office staff responsible for record keeping, correspondence, and preparation of required reports and deliverables.
Provide technical review of construction plans, specifications, and proposed changes for constructability and practicality.
Assist in managing overall site safety and compliance with permit conditions.
Monitor contractor performance, schedule, responsiveness, and effectiveness.
Help maintain project goals related to cost, schedule, and quality.
Support review, preparation, and processing of contractor payments with project controls staff.
Assist the Resident Engineer in leading meetings and preparing agendas and minutes.
Use strong oral and written communication skills to lead progress, project, safety, scheduling, and contract administration meetings with the client, local agencies, and community stakeholders.
Supervise project staff assigned to the construction team.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Prior experience as an Office Engineer or Assistant Resident Engineer on NYC projects.
Engineer in Training (EIT) certification.
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction, or a related field.
Demonstrated commitment to maintaining a safe and healthful workplace.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to manage personnel and remain responsive to client needs.
Effective research, data gathering, and analytical skills.
Proven ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Logical, detail‑oriented approach with the ability to coordinate multi‑faceted project components.
Strong time‑management skills.
Self‑motivated, proactive, and able to work independently.
Preferred Qualifications
10 years of experience, including at least 5 years as an Assistant Resident Engineer or Office Engineer for NYCDEP or NYCDDC projects.
Active New York Professional Engineer (PE) license.
Participation in regional or national professional associations.
Established relationships with NYCDEP personnel.
Interest and ability to support networking, proposal development, and growth in the NYC construction market.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of New York, NY.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $57.69 - $79.30/hr.
