Overview

Commissioning Engineer at SPX FLOW, Inc. The role focuses on Installation and Commissioning (I&C) activities, delivering successful project outcomes with autonomy and collaboration across project teams.

Job Summary

The purpose of the Installation and Commissioning Engineer (ICE) is to contribute to project results through coordinated management and execution of multiple tasks in alignment with I&C function objectives, priorities and methods. The job holder operates with a high level of autonomy and collaborates with peers and superiors to operationalize goals and priorities in line with the project’s strategic direction.

They have day-to-day accountability for delivering assigned tasks to meet time, quality and cost targets within financial, contractual and health and safety parameters. Each project is led by a Project Manager supported by a project team. The job holder may be assigned to specific projects in the project team as:

  • Site Manager (SM)
  • Installation Supervisor (IS)
  • Commissioning Team Leader (CTL)
  • Process Commissioning Engineer (PCE)

The job holder is usually assigned when site operations start if taking the role of IS or SM, or when installation is completed if taking the role of CTL or PCE. Willingness to travel globally up to 80% annually, with assignments lasting up to 6 weeks at a time.

Principal Duties And Responsibilities

As Process Commissioning Engineer, responsible for:

  • Installation Qualification
  • Operational Qualification support
  • Documentation management (including updating) for own areas
  • Performance Qualification support
  • Customer training

The Process Commissioning Engineer has overall responsibility for commissioning activities related to their assignment. Responsibilities include powering MCC panels and control cabinets, instrumentation setup, troubleshooting mechanical, hydraulic, thermal and electrical issues, starting up plants and verifying contractual performance from physical and process perspectives. They enable the customer to start production with a plant that is prepared, qualified and ready from a process perspective.

They support the software engineer during operational qualification (OQ) and assist the customer during performance qualification (PQ) and train operators. They attend meetings on demand and provide weekly commissioning reviews and reports. They deliver the final commissioning report, including: IQ report and instrument/setting records, plus results records.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Experience in engineering (design and/or construction and/or commissioning) in food processes within the food and beverage industry
  • Ability to anticipate and address events affecting project delivery
  • Capability to review and report project progress with timely information to stakeholders
  • Regularly review project progress and evaluate achievement
  • Apply SPX and statutory standards to minimize accidents, injuries and environmental impact
  • Define and validate deliverables and manage changes in a structured manner
Education And Experience
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering discipline, plus a minimum of 2 years of experience as a Commissioning Engineer
  • Experience in commissioning processes in the food industry, with knowledge of pasteurization, sterilization, CIP, powdering, etc.
  • Familiar with instrumentation (flow, pressure, temperature, etc.), valves, pumps, heat exchangers
  • Electrical troubleshooting and fluid mechanics
  • Awareness of food process risks (chemical, heat treatments, electrical, etc.)

Physical Demands

While performing duties, the employee may stand for long periods, operate machinery and lift up to 40 pounds. Kneeling, bending, stooping, walking, or working in high places may be required. Vision requirements include close, distance and depth perception, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. PPE is required.

Working Conditions

The work environment includes exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, chemicals, risk of electrical shock and vibration. Noise levels are typically loud. Reasonable accommodations may be made for qualified individuals with disabilities.
