Controls Staff Engineer – Corning Incorporated

Scope of Position

As an Electrical Controls Engineer, you will serve as the electrical controls resource for manufacturing process improvement and capital expansion projects. You will lead the electrical and controls scope of assigned projects, focusing on implementing PLC-based automation in Corning’s manufacturing plants and processes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and integrate PC and PLC process and automation controls into a robust manufacturing environment.
  • Develop and improve capabilities of manufacturing systems for seamless part tracking, measurements, process control, and data analysis (SCADA).
  • Collaborate with project managers, vendors, and division engineering to develop and implement control systems with state‑of‑the‑art manufacturing capacity.
  • Advance productivity gains through control software and hardware design implementations.
  • Collect and interpret control project needs from a variety of sources.
  • Participate in all project phases including design, fabrication, offline integration and testing, installation, production start‑up support, training of plant personnel, and technology transfer.
  • Oversee construction of equipment in vendors’ facilities.
  • Deploy process and automation controls on a global scale.
  • Design systems to control stability of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, mechanical, motion, chemical, robotics, power, molecular structure, multi‑state physics, and electromechanical systems.
  • Validate solutions using both traditional and advanced control methods.
  • Develop documentation: requirements, design, test plan, and user guide.
  • Report on project activities on a predetermined basis, ensuring compliance with customer requirements and applicable equipment safety standards.
  • Mentor and promote controls development best practices.
  • Ensure coding standard compliance through peer code reviews.
  • Enhance centralized software libraries.
  • Prepare and present technical updates in public forums.
  • Be available for significant domestic travel and, if required, international travel.
Required Education
  • BS in Electrical/Computer Engineering.
  • 5‑10 years of experience in Industrial Controls.
  • Manufacturing Systems Level Expertise (MES/SCADA and all layers to the machine).
  • Software/Controls programming experience with PLCs, HMIs, SCADA (Rockwell, Siemens, Omron).
  • Experience with HMI and SCADA systems (FT View, Optix, Ignition, iFix).
  • Strong electrical engineering knowledge.
  • Understanding of PID and advanced control implementation.
  • Capability to design, develop, and deliver integrated machine and motion control, automation, and process machine systems.
  • Ability to leverage external machine builders and system integrators.
  • Understanding of electrical panel layout, schematic design, ladder logic, system testing, and troubleshooting. Basic drafting skills.
  • Familiarity with PLC/IEC programming structures (ladder logic, function blocks, structured text, sequential flowchart).
  • Familiarity with machine safety design principles ISO 13849‑1 & ‑2.
  • Capability to execute project assignments in a cross‑functional team environment.
  • Rigor in experimental execution and analysis.
  • Experience designing and implementing industrial communication technologies (Ethernet/IP, Ether

    CAT, Profinet).
Desired Experiences
  • Familiarity with machine vision acquisition and analysis.
  • Knowledge of programming languages such as C#, Python, HTML, MATLAB.
  • Controls/Electrical experience in Manufacturing.
  • Project management skills (scoping, budgeting, timelines, MS Project).
  • Knowledge of equipment engineering, process support, and debugging.
  • Ability to lead technical teams within larger projects.
  • Familiarity with Fanuc and ABB robot programming.
