Systems Engineer, Aerospace / Aviation / Avionics, Mechanical Engineer, Engineering Design & Technologists
The Consolidated Operations, Management, Engineering and Test (COMET) contract provides overall management and implementation of ground systems capabilities, flight hardware processing and launch operations at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. These tasks support the International Space Station, Exploration Ground Systems, Space Launch System (SLS), Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle and Launch Services programs.
As a member of the Fluids Engineering group, you would work directly with engineers responsible for the design and sustaining of new and existing subsystems utilized in support of the Artemis missions. These systems include everything from the myriad of fluid systems required to support vehicle processing and launch, the Launch Accessories and Umbilicals that provide the ground to flight interfaces, the Crawler transporter that moves the stacked Mobile Launcher from the Vehicle Assembly Building to the Pad for launch to the cryogenics used to fuel the SLS vehicle.
Responsibilities- Provide practical application of engineering skills to perform flight and ground system fluid engineering projects that meet stakeholder expectations, system functional requirements and NASA program requirements.
- Support the design, development, test, and commissioning of various fluid Ground Support Equipment (GSE) and Ground Support Systems (GSS)
- Work with NASA and other contractor design teams to perform modifications to existing GSE/GSS fluid systems.
- Ensure fluid systems are safe for operation and comply with relevant codes and standards such as ASME B31.3 and ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
- Prepare conceptual design packages, perform feasibility studies, technical assessments, cost estimates and requirements development in support of new design projects and existing system design modifications.
- Perform fluid analysis, fundamental hand calculations, assure that systems/facilities operate in a safe and appropriate manner, and comply with all applicable NASA, federal, and industry codes/standards, including but not limited to: ASME code compliance, pipe stress, flow calculations and/or Orifice and relief valve sizing calculation.
- Produce and develop essential engineering documentation, models and drawings that are required to complete a viable system.
- Must have the ability to support or conduct design review presentations.
- Must have ability to successfully interface with customer representatives and manage completion of tasks on schedule and within budget to the customer's satisfaction.
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
- Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Bachelor of Science (BS) in Engineering or technical equivalent from an accredited institution.
Depending on the candidate’s experience, requirements, and business needs, we reserve the right to consider candidates at any level for which this position has been advertised.
Qualifications- Knowledge or experience with GSE and GSS supporting launching spaceflight vehicles is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of NASA-KSC design development processes and requirements is highly desirable.
- Experience with the design and sustaining of fluid systems, in Aerospace, Nuclear, or Oil and Gas are highly desirable.
- Experience in any of the following is highly desirable:
Pipe Stress analysis (Ceasar II or Auto Pipe), NASGRO, Fluid flow analysis software (AFT: Arrow, Fathom, Impulse). - Experience with design of components and systems that operate in hazardous environments, specifically Class 1 Division 2 zones is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of latest ASME B31.3, ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel code, and API standards for fluid systems is desirable.
- Microstation / CREO or other related CAD software experience is desirable.
- Functional knowledge of Maximo, Solumina, or other similar work authorization tools is desirable.
- Experience with Windchill and other product lifecycle management software systems is desirable.
Ability to read drawings, schematics, and specification…
