Vanderbilt University NYC - Adjunct Instructor in Culture, Advocacy, and Leadership

This is a non-tenure-track position with a one-year appointment (with the possibility of renewal conditional on need and performance) effective Fall 2026. We seek three instructors to join Vanderbilt University’s Program in Culture, Advocacy, and Leadership (CAL), a fast-growing, interdisciplinary major dedicated to civic engagement. Instructors will be appointed to teach at the new Vanderbilt New York City campus, located in Chelsea.

Duties involve teaching one section of CAL 4000:
Practicum and Internship Experience (roughly 15 students per section) each semester, supervising student internships (which will include two site visits for each student), and attending weekly meetings with other CAL 4000 instructors.

CAL 4000 is designed around experiential learning, providing students the opportunity to reflect collectively on the meaning and significance of their work. Accordingly, we seek candidates with experience in the applied humanities, community engagement, social and cultural analysis, public advocacy, character and leadership, or similar fields.

Qualifications

A PhD in Public Humanities, American Studies, Social and Cultural Analysis, English, History, Communication Studies, other Area Studies, or a related field required no later than August 1, 2026. Experience with experiential education is preferred. Compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, but we expect the salary range to be $9,000 per course.

Application Instructions

Applications, including cover letter, CV, teaching statement, evidence of teaching effectiveness, course evaluations, if available, and list of three references should be submitted. Candidates who advance in the process will be asked to submit three letters of recommendation. Review of applications will begin on April 15, 2026. Apply via Interfolio . <  >

Questions about the position should be directed to Paul Stob < paul.stob >, Director of the Program in Culture, Advocacy, and Leadership.
