Position Overview

The Assistant Head of School for Academics, Curriculum, and Instruction is a senior leadership position responsible for shaping and sustaining the academic vision of a vibrant coeducational Catholic high school rooted in the Dominican tradition. This leader ensures that teaching and learning embody excellence, innovation, and fidelity to the mission of the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill.

Reporting directly to the Head of School, the Assistant Head oversees all aspects of the instructional program, including curriculum design, instructional practice, assessment systems, faculty professional development, and academic operations. The ideal candidate is a visionary educator, a collaborative team builder, and a mission-driven leader committed to fostering a dynamic, student-centered learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

Curriculum Leadership

  • Lead the development, evaluation, and continual improvement of a rigorous, cohesive, and mission-aligned curriculum across all academic departments.
  • Ensure curriculum standards reflect best practices, meet accreditation and state requirements, and integrate Catholic identity and Dominican values.
  • Guide department chairs in long-term curriculum planning and articulation.

Instructional Excellence

  • Promote high-quality, research-based instructional practices throughout the school.
  • Conduct regular classroom walkthroughs and provide actionable feedback to teachers.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, inquiry, and instructional improvement.

Faculty Development & Support

  • Design and implement a comprehensive professional development program for faculty and academic staff.
  • Support teacher growth through coaching, mentorship, goal setting, and evaluation.
  • Lead recruitment, onboarding, and ongoing development of faculty members committed to excellence in teaching and Catholic education.

Academic Program Oversight

  • Oversee scheduling, course offerings, academic policies, and program structures.
  • Collaborate with counselors, department chairs, and the Head of School to ensure student support and program quality.
  • Monitor academic operations to ensure alignment with the school's mission and strategic plan.

Data, Assessment & Continuous Improvement

  • Develop and manage assessment systems that guide instructional decisions and support student achievement.
  • Analyze academic data to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Use data to inform professional learning, resource allocation, and program development.

Mission & Community Engagement

  • Serve as a visible and active leader in the school community, embodying the charism of the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill.
  • Collaborate with Campus Ministry, service-learning leaders, and mission-based programs to integrate faith, values, and academic life.
  • Promote a learning environment grounded in respect, inclusion, and Gospel values.

Parent & Student Engagement

  • Communicate academic expectations, policies, and progress clearly and consistently with parents and families.
  • Support student success through involvement in academic counseling, interventions, and enrichment programs.
  • Address parent and student concerns with professionalism, transparency, and care.
Qualifications

Required

  • Master's degree in Curriculum & Instruction, Educational Leadership, or a closely related field.
  • Successful classroom teaching experience.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of academic or instructional leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated success in leading teams, building collaborative cultures, and inspiring excellence.
  • Strong understanding of curriculum design, instructional practices, and assessment methodologies.
  • Commitment to Catholic education and the Dominican mission.

Preferred

  • Experience in a Catholic or independent school setting.
  • Familiarity with accreditation processes and academic strategic planning.
  • Ability to lead with empathy, vision, and integrity.
Compensation & Benefits

Salary: $80,000–$100,000 based on experience
