Helen Keller Services for the Blind is seeking a Full-Time New York State-licensed Special Education Teacher to join our Children Learning Center in Brooklyn, NY.

SUMMARY

The Special Education Teacher conducts a special education preschool classroom for children who are blind / visually impaired or those on the autistic spectrum, have multiple impairments, and have severe medical issues. Maintaining positive communication with parents, other staff members, and professionals outside of HKSB is critical to success. Must demonstrate a sincere commitment to HKSB’s Mission and Values, conduct him/herself at a high professional level at all times, and project a positive image of HKSB internally and externally.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Reports to school Principal
  • Develop instruction group and individual for all students in the class based on the individual needs of the student as outlined in the IEPs
  • Develops and implements student-specific adaptations for sensory, motor, self-help, and other areas of need in collaboration with therapists to maximize learning for each student.
  • Works collaboratively with the therapist and other school staff as a member of a trans-disciplinary team to develop and deliver an individualized program for each student
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with families that act to further the development of the child by assisting the family to carry over strategies from school to home. Acts as the primary contact between home and school
  • Continuously evaluates student progress and documents that progress in report cards, progress notes, and annual updates.
  • Submits weekly lesson plans and monthly class calendars to the principal
  • Maintains accurate attendance documents and submits to the administrative assistant monthly
  • Advocates for the educational and developmental needs of their students both in the school and in the wider community
  • Participates in teacher and team meetings and completes tasks from those meetings in a timely and professional manner
  • Actively participates in school-wide functions such as field trips, graduation, parent days, etc.
  • Seeks out and participates in professional development activities, appropriate to the population of students, both within the school and in the larger educational community.
  • Attendance at IEP meetings and searching for placements
  • Supervises and develops work duties and schedules for instructional assistants to ensure smooth functioning of the class
  • Prepares annual reviews for class assistants
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • Master's Degree in Special Education as a Teacher of The Visually Impaired or as a Special Education Teacher from an accredited Teacher Preparation program.
  • Experience with children with disabilities preferred
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid New York State Teachers License as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired or as a Special Education Teacher.
