Description OverviewThe New York Public Library for the Performing Arts (LPA) houses one of the world's most extensive combinations of circulating, reference, and rare archival collections in dance, film, music, recorded sound and theatre. These materials are available free of charge to all cardholders, along with a wide range of special programs, including exhibitions, seminars, and performances. In a city that is fueled by new arts and artists, we provide a home for everyone who has an interest in the performing arts - from kids attending story times, through students working on school projects, researchers creating new works based in the collections and lifelong learners who visit to engage with new interests and their communities.
The LPA Circulation team is at the heart of our busy first floor, often welcoming patrons to the Library and providing the initial engagement in a sometimes overwhelming building. This team member will serve at the main circulation desk, assisting new patrons with library cards and orienting them to available services and resources, checking items in and out, supporting class visits and outreach efforts, and helping to keep the circulating collections in good order.
Responsibilities:- Provides circulation/reference service and instruction to library patrons of all ages using print, media and digital resources
- Answers questions from the public in person, over the telephone and electronically
- Assists in collection maintenance, reserves and opening/closing procedures
- Performs community outreach to promote and increase public participation and use of library services
- Processes incoming Library materials
- Assists in planning and implementing collection maintenance projects
- Instructs patrons on the use of the Internet, computer applications and other Library services
- Ensures patrons follow library policies and procedures
- Performs other related duties as required
- High School Diploma or GED
- Successfully demonstrated work experience in a library or similar, customer-focused organization
- Successfully demonstrated public service experience with the ability to work well with a diverse range of patrons
- Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
- Successfully demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
- Strong organization and planning skills, including the ability to perform multiple projects or tasks simultaneously
- Computer and other related technology skills, including Google Workspace and Microsoft 365

Schedule35 hours a week, Monday-Friday, including evening shifts until 8pm and rotating Saturday shifts.
