Academic Mentors commit to 2 hours per week on a set day to meet with students ages 15-19 for a semester-long term. This helps build relationships and provide ongoing support throughout their educational journey.

Time Commitment:

This is an in-person volunteer opportunity that is semester-long. Mentors commit to a minimum 2 hours per week, for one semester, with the option to take additional shifts if available.

Program sessions for 9th-10th graders are on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45 pm–5:45 pm and for 11th graders on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:15 pm–7:15 pm. The program operates Monday–Friday at Careers in Sports High School, 730 Concourse Village West, Bronx, NY 10451. The opportunity runs January 2026 through June 2026.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Foster academic growth by providing guidance, resources, and tailored support.
  • Build relationships with students through consistent weekly meetings on a set day for 2 hours.
  • Serve as a positive adult role model and mentor.

Desired qualifications:

  • Passion for our mission and a genuine desire to make a positive impact in the South Bronx.
  • Passion for education: Interest in supporting students’ academic growth and success.
  • Communication skills: Excellent verbal communication and active listening in English; bilingual volunteers are welcome.
  • Patience & Empathy: Ability to empathize and provide a safe, supportive environment.
  • Reliability & Responsibility: Commitment to attending mentoring sessions consistently and on time.

Training:

An orientation and training session will be provided at the beginning of the semester, covering guidelines, mentoring tips, and the needs of SBU Academy students. Training will be available to volunteers when they join. Additional training and check-ins will occur throughout the semester to support skill development and address questions.

Volunteering as a mentor offers personal fulfillment, growth opportunities, networking with peers, and potential to count volunteer hours toward school service or academic requirements.

Beyond: Mentors are encouraged to engage with program participants who are also members of the South Bronx United Travel Soccer Teams. Mentors may attend games or practices to further support development and build relationships through soccer.
