Mentor a NYC High School Student! role at iMentor
iMentor matches high school students (mentees) one‑on‑one with volunteer adult mentors based on shared career and personal interests. Relationships range from a minimum of two years to a maximum of four years. Mentor‑mentee pairs cultivate their relationship using a combination of weekly written messages and monthly in‑person meetings.
iMentor is changing the face of youth mentoring. It demonstrates that even the busiest, most successful New Yorkers have time to be quality mentors and that formal mentoring increases the rate at which young people graduate from college, benefiting not only the individuals but society at large.
iMentor uses mentoring to bridge the divide between New York City’s diverse communities, creating unique and dynamic relationships that would not have been possible without the program. By exposing both mentors and mentees to new facets of their shared city, iMentor facilitates meaningful connections, empowering youth with the skills and resources critical for personal, academic, and career success.
About UsiMentor supports 3,000 NYC high school students every year through mentorship. Mentorship is about building meaningful relationships that build futures. Mentors are matched with juniors and seniors in high school (mentees) to form a one‑on‑one post‑secondary and/or college access planning pair relationship.
About YouOur mentors are often college‑educated volunteers (but a college degree is not a requirement). They commit to working one‑on‑one with a student for a minimum of two years. It’s a hybrid program: mentors write to their mentee once per week (remote) and meet once per month at the mentee’s school (in‑person) during the school year.
TO GET STARTEDYour first step is to attend Mentor Orientation. At orientation you’ll learn more information about our program, our students and best practices, and what our mentors have found helpful along the way. Please click the link below to view upcoming orientation dates.
As we are recruiting all volunteers from all backgrounds, iMentor needs 60 more men to say yes to mentoring a high school student this fall. Too many young men in NYC are still waiting for a mentor who looks like them, believes in them, and shows them what’s possible. That’s where you come in. Tap the male‑identifying men in your life and let them know that our students need them.
