OFF SITE & SWIM ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

Kids in the Game is looking for a seasonal Assistant Director to lead Jersey City off‑site and swim days. The role reports to the Camp Director, works closely with other Assistant Directors, and creates safe, engaging off‑site experiences for campers and staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ambassadorship, Core Values & Camp Culture
    • Represent camp mission in outdoor spaces, communicate safety and expectations, and create belonging outside the building.
    • Lead staff pre‑trip huddles, celebrate swim growth, and reinforce camp culture on the go.
    • Elevate the experience with intentional trips, smooth bus transitions, and clear staff roles.
    • Maintain a positive tone during unpredictable off‑site moments; keep staff grounded and staff mirroring optimism.
    • Ensure logistics, safety, and staff ratios create confidence and consistency for campers and families.
    • Advocate inclusive practices and modify expectations to honor every camper’s comfort level.
    • Hold space for emotional safety and respond to children’s emotions with care.
  • Safety, Compliance & Supervision
    • Maintain park, trip, and swim safety standards and camp procedures.
    • Conduct daily park safety checks and weekly visits to confirm compliance.
    • Maintain 1:5 staffing ratios and reassign staff to close staff gaps.
    • Lead pre‑trip safety checks (materials, headcounts, medical waivers).
    • Monitor weather, route changes, and partner communication for real‑time decisions.
    • Lead staff huddles before and after trips; support training on emergency response, first aid, and camper management techniques.
    • Respond calmly to incidents and communicate outcomes to families and leadership.
    • Maintain a culture of psychological safety for all campers and staff.
  • Logistics & Operations
    • Organize daily and weekly transportation (bus, subway, walking).
    • Train staff on travel procedures, safety, and bus system protocols.
    • Confirm pre‑purchased tickets and partner itineraries; maintain up‑to‑date rosters and consent forms.
    • Prepare trip packs and coordinate swim group transitions with accurate rosters.
    • Proactively communicate travel plans and tasks to staff and Camp Director.
  • Family Experience & Communication
    • Support the Admin Assistant Director in collecting and organizing consent forms.
    • Build trust during morning drop‑off and afternoon pick‑up, especially on swim/field‑trip days.
    • Answer parent questions about safety, supervision, and expectations.
    • Create talking points and day‑of updates to keep families informed.
    • Coordinate photos and videos with the camp photographer for the Waldo platform and newsletters.
  • Staff Leadership & Culture
    • Coach counselors on supervising and engaging swimmers, locker transitions, and field‑trip group management.
    • Model calm leadership and problem‑solving when plans change.
    • Provide feedback to reinforce camper safety and professionalism.
    • Collaborate with Programming & Admin Assistant Directors for cross‑team communication.
    • Celebrate staff wins and foster a culture of excitement and safety.
Seasonal Work Expectations & Schedule
  • Pre‑Summer (May–June)
    • 5–10+ hours per week (remote and in‑person mix). Weekly compensation: $250 total stipend plus $375 training payment.
    • Mandatory virtual and on‑site trainings (anti‑harassment, mandated reporter, CPR, first aid, AED, field day).
    • Training payments: $150 for virtual trainings, $150 for three on‑site days (one $75 field‑day course). Prorated for absences.
  • Summer Camp (June–August)
    • Dates:
      June 22 – August 28, 2026. Full‑time on‑site work (7:30 AM – 5:00 PM, 40–45 hrs/week).
    • Weekly compensation: $850–$900, paid biweekly. Total: $5,800–$7,200 (based on weeks and enrollment).
    • End‑of‑camp bonus: $100–$300 based on family satisfaction and enrollment.
    • Remote tasks: email, Slack communication, and support for family updates.
Qualifications
  • Completed physical exam, TB test, NJ and national background checks, and CPR, First Aid, AED certification.
  • 2–3 years of camp leadership experience with 5–10+ staff supervision.
  • Experience planning large‑scale events, field trips, and off‑site programs.
  • Strong organizational and risk‑management skills for off‑site supervision and transportation coordination.
